| When the Scribner Library re-opened in August 1995 after extensive renovation and expansion of the original building, it had gained needed space for its rare book collections and archives, and most important, a place in which these collections could be consulted. The Pohndorff Room, designed by the firm of Mesick, Cohen, and Waite as a neo-classical domed room, was provided through the generosity of Harry Yates in memory of his wife, Anita Pohndorff Yates, honorary alumna, 1983. The Pohndorff Room serves as a reading room for special collections as well as a reception area and forum for small lectures and literary readings. Along the room's curved exterior wall overlooking the North Broadway entrance to the campus is a permanent exhibition area. On exhibit are selections from the Yates collection of glassware and glass miniatures,"Big Book," a sculpture by John Giodano, class of 1983, and a sundial, originally a gift of the class of 1922, recently restored by David Peterson and set on a pedestal by Regis Brodie. Opposite the curved wall is a second exhibition space tucked into an alcove framed by sets of mahogany columns with bronze bases and capitals designed by John Mesick and sculpted by Glen Campell. |
