Rare Books- The Rare Book Collection includes titles on Saratoga architecture, the Trask family and Yaddo, early guidebooks and other historical accounts of visits to Saratoga Springs. See the on-line catalog, LUCY2, for call numbers.
- The Yates book collection is a good source for titles on local history. Consisting of about seventy titles in all, the Yates collection covers a wide array of local history topics including military and social history, the history of 19th century tourism, Saratoga Springs in fiction, thoroughbred racing, the curative properties of spring water and Saratoga County histories.
- The Steloff Collection includes a small selection of books by city historians and native Saratogians as well as prints and souvenirs from the 19th century about hotels and summer activities.
College Archives and Historical Manuscripts A good starting point for research on local history in the archives is the vertical files arranged by subject. The Skidmore College Archives document the establishment and administration of Skidmore College from 1903 to the present and include records of trustee meetings, presidential papers, administrative records and reports, faculty and student records. In addition, alumni and trustees have given the college significant papers and memorabilia further describing the institution. Among the college publications are the school newspaper, The Skidmore News, the yearbook, Eromdiks, the college bulletins, and alumni and student publications.- Saratoga Springs 19th Century Prints
Some of the prints were recently featured in the 1997 PBS film, Historic Views of the Spa City. These lithographs and engravings are useful for research on local architecture and the landscape. The collection is a good source of information on the history of Saratoga Springs, the history of education for women in the second half of the 19th century and holds valuable information for those involved in genealogical study. The collection contains publications, photographs, printed programs, scrapbooks, handwritten student compositions and news clippings.The collector, Anita Pohndorff Yates, gathered together a unique grouping of memorabilia, primarily documents, including rare 19th century business records, all of which describe downtown Saratoga Springs. The collection includes memorabilia about the Albany Boy’s Club, Saratoga Springs hotels, thoroughbred racing, SPAC, Skidmore College, Temple Grove Seminary and Yaddo. |
