The Visual Resources Collections are open and accessible to faculty and students alike. Specific policy information regarding the use of the collections can be found below. If you have further questions or wish to arrange an orientation session, please contact the Visual Resources Office directly (580-5519).

Policy Change: After May 31, 2006 the Visual Resources office will no longer produce or acquire 35mm slides. All new image production and acquisition will be in digital form only.

Faculty

Slides, digital images and study photographs are available to all faculty, both visiting and permanent, after an introductory session* with the Director.
The Visual Resources Office is open Monday - Friday, 8:30 am - 4:30 pm (closed 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm). It is not open on weekends or in the evenings, but faculty who are familiar with the collections can obtain a key at the Circulation Desk during normal library hours to gain access to the collections.

*If you plan to use a Student Assistant to pull slides for you, please be aware that an orientation session is needed before they will be allowed to sign out slides.

New Image Production

Digital Images
The Visual Resources Collections are moving toward an all-digital environment. As such, we have phased out the production of new slides and encourage faculty to use digital images. Our current policy is to only digitize existing analog images per faculty request. At present, the Visual Resources Collections contain 13,000+ digital images and grow at annual rate of more than 3000 images. In addition, the library subscribes to ARTstor, which contains more than 400,000 images and whose images can be combined with other content for dynamic presentations.

Using Slides

Sign-out Cards
Each faculty member is assigned individual sign-out cards for use when pulling slides. These are filed by department and alphabetically by last name in the first five drawers of the slide cabinets. Cards will be provided for you if you are using the collections for the first time. When removing slides from the drawers, make sure to replace each slide with your sign-out card. The shelf list card, located in front of each slide, must remain in the drawer, as the cards are used to simplify the refiling process.

Carousels
Slide carousels are located on top of the slide cabinets and can be borrowed for classroom use. Simply fill out the sign-out card located on the front of the box and leave the card with the staff. If a carousel is not needed, small boxes are also available and are located on top of the slide cabinets.

Loan Periods
The loan period for slides is the duration of the class period unless prior arrangements have been made with the staff of the Visual Resources Collections.
Slides should be returned immediately following class use in order to prevent loss and increase availability to other users. Slides can be placed in the Return Box located just inside the door of the Visual Resources Office. If the Visual Resources Office is closed, slides can be returned to the Circulation Desk of the library.

Other

Study photographs
In addition to slides and digital images, the Visual Resources Collections contain approximately 8000 mounted study photographs that are available for classroom use and which mirror the collections' slide holdings. If you plan to use the photo collection for a class project, please make prior arrangements.

Student Presentations and Special Projects
Faculty should encourage students to make use of the collections for class presentations and special projects (see Student Use below). If your students will be utilizing slides and/or digital image files for their coursework, the Director of Visual Resources will be happy to discuss the particular needs of the your course and the various options available to accommodate your needs.

Students

Slides, digital images and study photographs are available to students by prior arrangement. If you need to use slides, digital images or study photographs for a class presentation or special project, follow the procedures outlined below.

Using the Collections

Make an Appointment
In order to receive the best service possible, make an appointment in advance. Please allow 45 minutes - 1 hour for your visit, as this much time is needed to receive a proper orientation to the collections and to locate the appropriate images.

Identify Your Research
During your visit you will be assisted in locating the images you need, but it is recommended that you come prepared with a list of desired images. Books and periodicals are a good place to start looking, and they can be located using the library's catalog (Lucy2) and the subject page for Art and Art History respectively. Additionally, the Re:discovery* slide database can be searched to determine if the collections contain the image(s) you need.

*Accessible to Skidmore students, faculty & staff only.

Using Slides in Class
Slides pulled for class presentations are put on reserve at the Circulation Desk and can be checked out (remember your student ID) for three-hour increments at any time prior to your presentation. The slides are to remain within the library and can be viewed using the Caramate projectors located in the Group Study Room, immediately adjacent to the Visual Resources Office, on the second floor of the library. On the day of your presentation, the slides may be taken out of the library for the class period but should be returned to the Circulation Desk within 1/2-hour after the end of the class. (Special arrangements can be made for classes that run longer than 3 hours.) Slides returned late will be assessed a fine.

Having Images Made
If you make an appointment at least 2 weeks prior to your presentation, and the images you need are not in the collections, you may have digital images made with the prior approval. Images made for student presentations are added to the permanent collections of the Lucy Scribner Library. Alternatively, if you wish to digitize your own images, two self-help scanning stations are located near the Help Desk on the first floor of the Lucy Scribner Library.
