Troubleshooting

1) Help! Which database should I use?

2) Help! I received NO records.

3) Help! I received only a few records.

4) Help! I received too many records.

1) Help! Which database should I use?

Scribner's databases are arranged by subject/topic (Resources by Subject or Topic) and alphabetically (Electronic Resources A to Z). Unless you know exactly which database you want to use, check to see which databases are listed under the subject area you are researching (Resources by Subject or Topic).

Information is available for each of the databases listed. Just click on the Question Mark for a description of which topic(s) and time period the database covers. A description of each database is usually available on one of the initial database screens.

Remember: you can always ask the Reference Librarian for help (tel 518-580-5503).

2) Help! I received NO records.

You may have a typo in your query. Double check your spelling.

You may be using the wrong database. Make sure you are using a database that is likely to include information on your topic. (The Subject/Topic pages identify databases for research in specific disciplines. Click on the Question Mark for a description of which topic(s) and time period the database covers.)

You may be looking for something beyond the time period covered by the database. Double check the database's coverage. (Click on the Question Mark for a description of which topic(s) and time period the database covers.)

You may be using incorrect search syntax or searching the wrong field. Double check your Boolean logic and the field(s) you are searching.

Remember: you can always ask the Reference Librarian for help (tel 518-580-5503).

3) Help! I received only a few records.

Try adding synonyms for your search terms by using OR or its equivalent.

4) Help! I received too many records.

Add additional search terms AND.

Delete less specific synonyms and ambiguous terms.

Add limits, e.g. date of publication.

Search fewer fields, e.g., just the title field.

Remember: you can always ask the Reference Librarian for help (tel 518-580-5503).
