How Do I...
Locate Periodicals in the Scribner Library

The process outlined here assumes that you have a citation for a particular article. If you are just starting your research, use the databases available on the subject pages to get citations and then look to see if we access to the particular journal, magazine or newspaper that you need.

The library has access to more than 14,000 journal, magazine and newspaper titles. The majority are accessible through various subscription databases. Fewer than 2000 of those are in print or on microfilm. Most of the time you will be getting a citation in one database, but accessing the article itself through another database.

Check to see if the library has access to the periodical (journal, magazine, newspaper) you are seeking:

This search box is available on the Journals & Newspapers page and all of the subject pages. Use it to determine if the library has access to the periodical you are seeking. (Make sure you enter the title of the publication, not the title of the article.)

Enter words from the journal title: Search tips
Keywords:

Pay special attention to the holdings information. Make sure that the article you are looking for falls within the holdings range.

If the library does not have access to the periodical you are seeking:

1) Put in an interlibrary loan request.
(You must be a Skidmore student, staff or faculty member to use Scribner's Interlibrary Loan service.)

OR

2) Check to see if another library in the area has the periodical.
Skidmore students, staff and faculty can obtain a Direct Access Program card to borrow directly from other academic libraries in the Capital District. Inquire at the circulation desk for more details.

If you have any questions about locating periodicals, please ask at the reference desk.
