Printing in Scribner Library

There are four (4) networked, B & W printers in the Scribner Library. There are recycling bins placed around the Library to discourage paper waste.

On the 1st floor, use Library 1 (near the Circulation Desk), Library 2 (near the Reference Desk) and Library 3 (near the Circular Staircase). Library 4 is on the 4th floor. If you have any question about which printer your public computer has been programmed to use, ask the Reference Librarian or the IT Help Desk.

Printing from JSTOR

To print an article from JSTOR in its entirety, select the PDF link from the results screen:

Or, click on the title to display the full record and select the PDF icon:

This will open a new window, where you will be able to view, save, email or print the PDF using the icons at the top of the document. If you choose to print the article, click on the printer icon that is located at the top of the PDF viewer.

When the printer request box appears, click the OK button. If you are not sure if the process is working, please see the Reference Librarian or ask for assistance at the IT Help Desk.

Note: If you try to print from the browser toolbar or File Menu, you may find that you are able to print only the page appearing on the screen. To print the document in its entirety, choose the printer icon from the PDF toolbar.

Scanning

There are two scanning stations located near the IT Help Desk on the 1st floor of the library. They are flatbed scanners, one connected to a PC, the other to a Mac.

Please note: scanned images cannot be stored on the scanning station computer. Images should be saved to a USB thumb drive or a Datastor account. For information on setting up a datastor account, visit the IT help page or stop by the IT Help Desk on the 1st floor of the library, or call ext. 5900.

The software used is Adobe Photoshop. You may scan text and/or images, but it’s important to understand that scanning produces image files, not word documents able to be manipulated. What this means is that when scanning, you are taking a picture of the material(s), regardless of whether it consists of words or images, and that what you will pull up in your computer as the scanned/saved image is a picture of this material(s). You will not be able to manipulate this material(s), other than minor cropping and editing of certain images. If you need to scan materials with the intent of manipulating the content, Media Services may be able to assist you. They are located in Palamountain, 2nd fl. Hours: 8-4:30, some evening hours, ext. 5940.

Card/Coin Operated Copiers

There are two (2) B & W photocopiers located on the First Floor of Scribner Library, in the Photocopier room near the main entrance of the library. One is coin operated, the other is card operated. There are also two (2) B & W photocopiers located on the Ground Floor of the Scribner Library. The Campus Card Office recommends students allocate $25 per semester for library photocopiers. If you experience difficulties with your Skidmore Card when using the Library’s copiers, ask for assistance at the Circulation Desk or contact the Bursar/Campus Card Office, Starbuck Center, Lower Level, M-F 8:30am to Noon & 1pm to 4:30pm, Ext. 5854.

Color photocopies are available at Office Services in Case Center, 1st floor (at the library end). Open 7am to 4:30pm (even open during the lunch hours), weekdays. Other services offered include:

In Saratoga Springs, photocopies and related services are available at Staples, 581-7298 and FedEx Kinko’s, 583-7800.

Accessing eBooks at Skidmore

Ebooks combine the convenience of online research, used either in Scribner Library or accessed remotely, with the depth and scope of book-based research. There are several ways to access Scribner Library’s ebooks:

  • During your research, you may come across an electronic book title listing in LUCY2. Click on the title link, and you’ll be connected to the ebook catalog record. At the top of the record, see Link to fulltext. Click link, and see the ebook interface screen (see example below). Decide whether you want to browse or check out (see paragraph below for guidance), and then follow linked simple instructions on ebook user interface screen.
  • You may also access ebooks at netLibrary.com and search the collection by the following fields: title, author, subject, keywords, full text, publisher, pub year, ISBN, language.
  • You can also set limits in the Advanced Search mode of LUCY2. Press LIMITS button. In second search box, use arrow to select Ebooks. Click Apply Limits button. You will be returned to the Advanced Search screen, and you’ll see a message stating Search Limits Are In Effect. In the Search For box, enter your search terms (i.e. keyword, title, author, etc.) and adjust default fields in the Search In boxes to correspond with search terms. For example, if you enter the title The Old Man and the Sea, the Search In box should be changed to title. If you enter the word peace, the Search In box should be changed to subject.
Ebook use instructions: Do I want to browse or check out?

There are two simple ways to use ebooks.

  • Browse is for shorter time periods, similar to taking a book off the shelf, leafing through it and deciding whether it’s the right book for you. If 15 minutes passes without continued browsing, the book is automatically returned to the virtual shelf, and will be available for others to use. If you plan to search for and/or browse an ebook, you will not need to create an account.
  • Check out is for more extended use. If you wish to use an ebook for a longer time period, you will need to check it out. Before you do this, you must create an account, a simple process that takes just a few minutes. Here’s how: on ebook user interface screen (see example below), click link Create an account, located under log in button, bottom of page, at right. Fill in required fields. You may select any user name and password you like, they do not have to be the same ones you use for Skidmore on/off-campus email and computer access. Sometimes a user name is already taken, and the system will prompt you to select a new one. Once the system accepts your user name and password, you will be prompted to accept their usage terms. Click the Accept button, your name will appear on the right hand side of the screen, and now you’ll have the option to browse or check out the ebook. Note your user name and password in a PDA or binder, so you will have it handy next time you want to use an ebook.

Returning ebooks is simple, too

  • When browsing an ebook, the system will return the book for you after 15 minutes of nonuse.
  • When the book is checked out to you, click the Check in ebook button at top of check out user screen, and the book will then become available to other users. The Home button at the top of the ebook screen will bring you to the search screen, where you can continue your search for other titles. Or, simply close out of netLibrary altogether. Any questions? Ask the Reference Librarian for assistance, ext. 5503.
