Library Carrels

Faculty Carrels

Carrels are assigned for one academic term according to need and order of request. In certain circumstances, a person may be able to keep a carrel for the entire year. The carrel has been reserved for your use alone unless the Library Office is aware that the facility is to be shared. If you wish to request an extension please speak with the Library Office, X5506.

Priorities are as follows:

  • Faculty who lose their office because of sabbatical or for other reason.
  • Faculty who are full-time lecturers without offices.
  • Faculty who require regular access to non-circulating library materials.
  • Lastly, carrels are assigned to other faculty on a first-come, first-serve basis, though carrels will go first to those who have never had one before.

If you are assigned a carrel, you must sign for your key in the College Librarian's office within two weeks of receiving acknowledgment from the library office. Otherwise, your carrel will go to the next person on the list.

Communications capabilities:

  • All carrels are wired for both voice and data.
  • Faculty may request a phone from Telecommunications (Technical Services, ext. 5999).
  • Faculty who need a data connection should submit an IT help ticket.

Student Carrels

Carrels are assigned on a first-come, first-serve basis for seniors who are are working on senior theses which require access to library materials. Two students are assigned to each carrel. Applications for student study carrels are available in the Library Office, room 103. Carrels are assigned for one semester only.

If you are assigned a carrel, you must sign for your key in the College Librarian's office within two weeks of receiving acknowledgment from the library office. Otherwise, your carrel will go to the next person on the list.

All carrels are wired for both voice and data.

Carrel Policies

  • Carrels may not be sublet without permission of the College Librarian.
  • Carrels may only be occupied during hours when the library is open.
  • Carrel occupants are responsible for and will be billed for any damage incurred during the semester.

Subletting a carrel without permission, occupying a carrel after library hours, or intentionally damaging a study carrel will result in immediate forfeiture of carrel privileges.

Library materials may not be left in study carrels unless those materials have been checked out. Place library materials that you have not checked out on a shelving cart immediately after use. Carrels will be inspected periodically and any materials not checked out (including non-circulating books and journals) will be reshelved.

Persistently leaving materials that have not been checked out in a study carrel may result in forfeiture of carrel privileges.
