Study Spaces in the Library

Window seating in the library The Library contains more than 600 seats in spaces designed to take advantage of natural light. Lounge seating is located adjacent to all the windows; open carrels and tables are interspersed in living-room-sized spaces throughout the library - such as the east end of the ground floor, first floor and second floor, and the west end of the first through fourth floors. There are also study areas on the north and south sides of the second through fourth floors in front of the windows. Many of the carrels and study tables in these areas have data and power connections.

There are two specialized study spaces - one for viewing visual resources and the Pohndorff Room for accessing the Special Collections.

There are twenty-two individual study rooms which are assigned by the College Librarian (see carrel policy,) as well as non-lockable individual study carrels located on the third and fourth floors.

The library contains 18 group study rooms of varying sizes, with four to ten seats. Four of these rooms, located on the first floor, are specialized spaces for electronic media use, but they may be available for general group study when not in use for viewing or listening. A room on the second floor adjacent to the slide room is dedicated to group slide viewing. The thirteen general group study rooms are located on the third (five rooms) and fourth (eight rooms) floors.

The library also contains three classrooms, two which are scheduled by the registrar and the Schaffer Bibliographic Instruction Room where students, faculty, and staff learn how to use the information resources available at Skidmore.
