3. Thomas Patino ‘16, a business and government double major was selected as one of eight students (from of pool of 250+ applications) for a paid internship with Microsoft. Thomas learned so much that he presented his experience at MIT in October 2015. Here’s a summary:

  • During the summer, Thomas worked as a data science intern at the Microsoft Research lab in New York City using applied statistics and machine learning to model, predict, and find creative solutions to a wide variety of topics, such as urban planning, policy making, and financial strategy. This data-driven approach used R and Python as the tools and techniques for acquiring, cleaning, and utilizing large amounts of information to make it usable and understandable. Thomas and his team investigated and quantified the demand for homes in the best public schools in New York City by analyzing over 10,000 home sales and over 800 primary schools. This analysis revealed the implicit cost of purchasing a home zoned for each elementary school in the city. The findings of the team’s research were presented at Grace Hopper, Tapia, and CODE@MIT conferences in Austin, Houston, and Cambridge respectively. You can view their original presentation here.
