History
Named in honor of Trustee Emeritus George F. Colton, Colton Alumni
Welcome Center is located on North Broadway, across from the main
entrance to campus. The center welcomes visiting alumni and offers maps
and directions, as well as a library of alumni-authored works.
George Colton, husband of Ruth Stevens Colton '35, joined the Skidmore
College Board of Trustees in 1972, thanks to the recruitment effort of
Joseph C. Palamountain Jr., the College's fourth president. Dartmouth's
vice president of development and alumni affairs at the time, Colton
went on to chair Skidmore's board from 1983 to 1986. On his retirement
in 1986, he received and honorary degree from Skidmore.
Originally known as Overlook,
Colton House first belonged to William Millard, a local coal company
owner. In 1954, the Bolles family purchased the property, selling it two
years later to the Magovern family. Skidmore bought the home in
September 1994 and named it Colton House in May 1995.
Until recently, Colton House served as office space for part of the
advancement staff, including the vice president for advancement. The
Office of Alumni Affairs and College Events moved to Colton House in October 2002.
