History
Therese Filene was the mother
of Helen Filene Ladd '22, a member of the first graduating class
of the newly chartered Skidmore College. Therese was a gifted
musician who played the violin, piano, and organ. In her other
interests, she was an early supporter of what eventually became
the USO and an active leader of the women's suffrage movement.
Helen Filene Ladd served her
alma mater throughout her life and was honored in 1967 with a
doctorate of human letters from the College she called "my
other home." That same year, she helped celebrate the dedication
of the Therese W. Filene Music Building, named to honor her mother
and made possible by the generosity of Mrs. Ladd and the Lincoln
and Therese Filene Foundation.
