Jonsson
Tower
The tallest building on campus,
Jonsson Tower is a prominent landmark. Its occupants include:
Campus
Safety (basement), the primary contact point for all
safety and security issues. Health
Services (first floor), providing basic medical services
for students and employees. Counseling
Center (first floor), including personal counseling
and the College chaplains. WSPN Radio
(basement), Skidmore's student-operated FM and Internet radio
station. Residences (floors 2-11), housing approximately 200 students. Tower Lounge
(penthouse), a popular space for meetings, parties, and study
breaks. It offers a commanding view of the surrounding countryside.
Disability Access
The basement entrance is wheelchair-accessible,
with special parking in the adjacent lot along the south side
of the building. The first-floor entrance on the east side offers
access to the main campus level, along with covered paths for
easy mobility during inclement weather. Elevators within the building
connect all floors except the penthouse lounge.
The Tower Lounge on the penthouse
is not wheelchair-accessible. All supplies, media equipment, and
furniture for that space must be carried up a flight of stairs.
History
Jonsson Tower and the Jonsson
Campus are named for Margaret Jonsson, wife of J. Erik Jonsson.
Founder of Texas Instruments and former mayor of Dallas, J. E.
Jonsson played a key role in Skidmore's move from downtown Saratoga
Springs to its current location. While a trustee, he and his wife
purchased the Woodlawn Estate and persuaded Skidmore to build
an entirely new campus on the parklike location.
