Kathryn H. Starbuck came to Skidmore in 1921, and for the rest of her life served the College in an astonishing range of capacities: professor of law, secretary of the College, trustee, and executive director of the alumnae association. She taught classes in English, political science, and home economics, and handled College publicity, alumni relations, and fund-raising projects. Described by President Moore as a "militant pioneer in spirit," she also set an example for students in her civic commitments to women's suffrage, world peace and politics. Starbuck Center was dedicated in her honor at a memorial service in 1965. Part of the original campus design, Starbuck Center was intended as the reception and meeting area for the Moore Quad of residence halls (McClellan, Penfield, Wilmarth, and Kimball halls). When the campus became coeducational, the need for such spaces declined, and Starbuck was used as a student lounge and occasional performance and exhibition space. The building was converted into offices for student clubs, and for a time the Psychology Department had offices and labs on the lower floor. In 1999, Starbuck was expanded and renovated for its current use as a center for student-related services. You can still see relics of its original role in the large fireplaces along the far walls of the HEOP and Dean of Studies offices. Creative Thought Matters.
