Opera Workshop

Offered each spring, Skidmore’s Musical Theater - Opera Workshop trains the singer-actor to develop vocal and physical freedom while performing. We focus on how to develop a character and engage wholly, mentally and physically, in song interpretation. Students interested in gaining performance experience as well as exploring this art form are encouraged to audition.

Recent Skidmore Musical Theater - Opera Workshop productions include:

  • Handel’s XERXES (2016)
  • “An Afternoon of Opera Scenes” (2017)
  • Act II of Mozart’s “Le Nozze di Figaro” (2018)
  • The World Language of Opera (2019) -a collaboration with the World Languages Department
  • Cinderella: A Slippery Slope (2020)
  • Hello/Goodbye: Sung Stories (2022)

Members of the "MOp-Shop" frequently collaborate with guest professionals in both productions and masterclasses. Some of these guest artists include conductors Noah Palmer, Scott Schoonover, countertenor Daniel Bubeck, and stage directors Richard Kagey, Elizabeth Margolius, and Ian Belton. Members of the Workshop frequently attend live opera performances, both in the capital region and NYC.
