Full slate of action for winter sports teams

Swimming & diving posted a pair of convincing wins over Utica this past weekend as the men won 173-75 and the women earned a 185-92 victory. For the women, senior diver Kristen Stearns (Torrington, Conn.) set a new 1-meter, 11-dive record, while senior Carrie Koch (Wellesley, Mass.), sophomore Catherine King (Wellesley, Mass.) and freshman Yookee Roh (Tenafly, N.J.) won two individual events each and teamed up with junior Sarah Shaw (Merion, Pa.) to win the 200 medley relay. For the men, sophomore diver Jacob Nathan (Toledo, Ohio) swept the diving events. Senior Jesse Adler (Chappaqua, N.Y.), junior Peter Quattromani (Providence, R.I.), sophomore Nick Sauerbrunn (Avon, Conn.) and freshman Mario Hyman (Kingston, Jamaica) all won multiple events for Skidmore.  The Thoroughbreds return to action Friday, Nov. 30, at RIT for the Liberty League championships.

Ice hockey posted a 1-0-1 record in a pair of road ECAC East games. On Friday, junior Vlad Gavrik (Kharkiv, Ukraine) tallied two goals and an assist and freshman goalie Ben Freiberg (Weston, Mass.) made 29 saves in a 2-1 win over Babson. In Saturday's 4-4 tie at UMass Boston, Skidmore rallied from a four-goal deficit behind two goals from senior Zack Menard (Burlington, Mass.) and 17 saves on 17 shots by sophomore Spencer Sodokoff (Greenwich, Conn.) to earn the tie. The Thoroughbreds are now 3-2-1 and host Nazareth this Saturday, Nov. 24, in the opening game of the 2012 Skidmore Invitational.

Men's basketball opened its season with a 1-1 record in a pair of overtime games at the Widener Tip-Off. In Saturday's consolation game, sophomore Connor Merrill (Panton, Vt.) hit the game-winning three with 0.03 seconds remaining to lift Skidmore to a 56-55 win over host Widener. Merrill finished with 15 points, eight rebounds and three blocks while freshmenTanner Brooks (Pikesville, Md.) and Aldin Medunjanin (New York, N.Y.) recorded 14 and 11 points, respectively. Merrill earned All-Tournament team honors after averaging 16.5 points, 8.0 rebounds and 2.0 blocks for the weekend. The Thoroughbreds host Southern Vermont at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 20, in their home opener.

Women's basketball went 0-2 at the Skidmore Invitational this past weekend, falling to Tufts and Ithaca. In the opener against Tufts, sophomore Angela Botiba (Douala, Cameroon) tallied a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds on her way to being selected to the All-Tournament team. On Saturday against Ithaca, freshman Skylar Caligaris (Cambridge, Mass.) scored 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting from beyond the arc and junior Jordyn Wartts (St. Louis, Mo.) also poured in 12 points. The Thoroughbreds play on the road tonight at Potsdam with an 8 p.m. tip. ~ By Cody Berschwinger
