The regular season has started for Skidmore athletic teams as women's volleyball and field hockey and men's and women's soccer were in action for the first time in 2013 over the weekend

Volleyball opened with two straight-set wins against Curry College and Bryn Athyn Saturday at the Cazenovia Blue and Gold Invitational. Corinne Palmer '14 was named Liberty League Performer of the Week for registering a total of 30 kills and four blocks. The team returns to action Wednesday, Sept. 4, when it hosts the Sage Colleges.

In field hockey, the Thoroughbreds took down Castleton State Friday 5-2 before falling 4-3 in overtime against SUNY Cortland Saturday. Melanie Webb '15 tallied three goals and was tabbed as the Liberty League Offensive Performer of the Week, and two-time All-American Kelly Blackhurst '14 recorded three goals and one assist in the team's opening weekend. The Thoroughbreds travel to SUNY New Paltz Sept. 7 before opening at home against SUNY Cortland at 4 p.m. Sept. 14.

Adam Beek '15 and Nick Masiero '14 received All-Tournament honors as the men's soccer team began its season at the Roger Williams University Squad Locker Classic. The Thoroughbreds were edged 2-1 by Regina Salve Saturday and suffered a 2-0 setback against Roger Williams Sunday. The team will host its first home game of the season at 4 p.m. Friday, Sept 6, when it takes on the Sage Colleges.

The women's soccer team started the season undefeated, compiling a record of 1-0-1 at the Farmingdale State Tournament. The team battled to a 1-1 draw with Buffalo State Friday before downing the host Rams 3-0 Saturday. Jen Wardyga '14 scored once and assisted on another goal in the team's victory. In goal, Gab Lawrence '14 made four saves for her first shutout of the year. Next, the Thoroughbreds face UMass Boston and Castleton St. Sept 7 and 8 at the Castleton State College Tournament. ~ By Dan St.-Jacques
