Thoroughbreds notch weekend victories

Oliver Lotusenko ’15 captured two titles at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Northeast Regionals on Sunday at Ithaca College. After dominating the opening rounds, Lotusenko secured the singles championship with a 6-0, 6-4 win, then paired with Danny Knight ’14 to win the doubles title 6-7, 7-5, 7-6 against teammates Alec Hoblitzell ’15 and Jimmy Sherpa ’14 in an all-Skidmore final. Lotusenko and Knight will compete at the USTA/ITA National Small College championships Oct. 10-13 at the Three Oaks Tennis Center in Fort Myers, Fla. The team travels to the Wallach Invitational Oct. 12-13.

Women’s tennis cruised to a 9-0 win against Liberty League foe Union College on Friday. The team did not drop a set in the victory and has now won 17 straight league matches. Melissa Hirsch ’14 led the way for the Thoroughbreds, securing a 6-0, 6-0 win at number-one singles and 8-4 at number-two doubles with Madeline Benn ’17. The Thoroughbreds compete at the ITA Regionals Saturday through Monday, Sept. 28-30, at William Smith College.

Field hockey routed RPI 8-0, in Saturday’s first conference game. Dani DeGregory ’16 netted a hat trick and added two assists for a career-high eight points and Kelly Blackhurst ’14 added two goals and two assists. In goal, Haley McDougall ’15 made six saves in her sixth win of the season. The Thoroughbreds, ranked 13th in the latest Penn Monto/NFHCA Division III National Coaches’ Poll, return to action at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25, in a home game against Utica College.

Women’s soccer downed Plattsburgh State, 2-0, Saturday, improving to 5-0-1 on the season. Emily Saliterman ’17 scored twice and Jenna Spooner ’14 and Morgan Governale ’15 each contributed an assist. The Thoroughbreds have strung together three straight shutouts and have not conceded a goal since Sept. 7. They open Liberty League play at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 24, when they welcome Union College.

Brock Bakewell ’15 tallied twice against RPI Wednesday, but it was not enough as men’s soccer fell, 3-2, in overtime in its Liberty League opener. The team bounced back Saturday with a 2-0 win against previously undefeated Plattsburgh State. Adam Beek ’16 produced a goal and an assist and goalkeeper Danny Ebenstein ’16 made five saves, registering his first shutout and win of the season. Skidmore hosts Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24.

Men’s golf placed fourth of 24 teams in the Williams College Fall Invitational played Sept. 21-22. Mackenzie Denver ’16 was the team’s top finisher, placing second at six-over-par with a score of 75-73 -148. The team will compete in the Liberty League qualifier Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 28-29, at St. Lawrence.

Volleyball was edged Tuesday by Union College 3-1 in its first Liberty League contest of the season. Aria Goodman ’15 led the way with 14 kills and nine digs and Natalie Nagle ’14 recorded a double-double with 11 kills and 11 digs. The team travels to the Baruch College for the Baruch Tri-Match Saturday, Sept. 28. ~ By Dan St.-Jaques
