Women's soccer, field hockey extend win streaks

Women’s soccer remained unbeaten on the season and extended its winning streak to seven games with a pair of 1-0 wins in conference play this past week. Arena Manning ’16 netted her second and third goal of the season with game-winners against Union on Tuesday and Vassar on Saturday. Gab Lawrence ’14 recorded her fifth straight shutout in goal for the Thoroughbreds. The team travels to Middlebury College Wednesday, Oct. 4, for a 7 p.m. contest.
Field hockey also extended its winning streak to seven games with two victories last week. Jenn Hanks ’16 tallied the overtime goal against Utica College in Wednesday’s 2-1 match. Dani DeGregory ’16 had a hand in all three Skidmore goals during Saturday’s 3-1 win at St. Lawrence, scoring the game winner and adding two assists. Goalkeeper Haley McDougall ’15 made four saves for her eighth win of the season. The Thoroughbreds, ranked 12th in the latest Penn Monto/NFHCA Division III National Coaches’ Poll, play at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 1, at Middlebury College.
Robby Smukler ’15 scored in the 84th minute to lift men’s soccer to a 2-1 win against Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts Tuesday. Brock Bakewell ’15 recorded his team-leading sixth goal of the season in the win. The Thoroughbreds battled to a 1-1 draw at Vassar Saturday in their second Liberty League game of the season. After conceding a goal in the opening minutes of play, Adam Beek’s ’16 registered his third goal of the season in the 65th minute, forcing the overtime. Eli Kisselbach ’16 made four saves, including one in overtime, to help preserve the tie. The team hosts Southern Vermont College at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 1.
Men’s golf qualified for next spring’s Liberty League championship tournament with a third-place finish in the fall qualifier. Tim Manwaring ’16 was the team’s top finisher, placing fifth with a score of 75-69 –144, one stroke ahead of teammate Makenzie Denver ’16, who shot a one-over-par 72-73 –145. The team wraps up its fall season at the Golfweek Fall Invitational Oct. 13-15 in Destin, FL.
Aria Goodman ’15 was selected to the all-tournament team at the Baruch Invitational as volleyball suffered setbacks against Richard Stockton College and Baruch College on Saturday. Against Richard Stockton, Goodman had a double-double with 13 kills and 14 digs and Natalie Nagle ’14 added 14 kills, 11 digs and three aces. The Thoroughbreds travel to Bard College Friday, Oct. 4, for Liberty League matches against Vassar College and Clarkson University. ~ By Dan St.-Jacques
