To Everything There is a Season

September 8, 2014

Historian and author Allan M. Winkler will give a talk on singer Pete Seeger at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 10, in Davis Auditorium, Palamountain Hall, on the Skidmore College campus.

The talk, titled “To Everything There is a Season: Pete Seeger and the Power of Song,” is based on Winkler’s 2009 book by the same name. Using Seeger's long life and music to reflect on the important role folk music played in various protest movements of the 20th century, the author describes how Seeger applied his musical talents to improve conditions for the less fortunate.

Admission to the lecture is free and open to the public.

Winkler is a distinguished professor of history at Miami University of Ohio, where he also serves as associate dean of the college of arts and sciences. He is the author of 11 books, including The Politics of Propaganda:  The Office of War Information, 1942-1945; and Life Under a Cloud:  American Anxiety about the Atom. His honors include the distinguished teacher award for excellence in graduate education and mentoring at Miami University (2008); outstanding teacher award, Ohio Academy of History (2000); and being named one of the 12 top teachers in Yale College (1977-78).

He is a magna cum laude graduate of Harvard University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree. Winkler holds master’s degrees from Columbia University and Yale University. He also earned a doctorate at Yale.

Skidmore’s American Studies Department is sponsoring Winkler’s talk, with support from the departments of music and history.
