Another great week for Thoroughbred athletes

The Thoroughbred golfers capped another successful week for the fall sports teams, finishing second of 19 at the Williams College Invitational. Women’s soccer and women’s tennis both posted 2-0 weeks and men’s tennis had a strong showing at the ITA Regionals. Field hockey picked up another win and men’s soccer picked up a point, rebounding from a tough midweek loss.

Golf shot a second-round 293 to rally for a second place finish at the 19-team Williams College Invitational. The team sat in eighth after shooting a 307 on Saturday, but battled back, improving 14 strokes to move up six places on Sunday. Tim Manwaring ’16 was one-under on Sunday, tying for second place with a score of 76-70—146. Teddy Badenhausen ’17 tied for seventh with 77-72—149, Mitchell Campbell ’17 and Mackenzie Nelson ’17 tied for 23rd (77-76—153) and Will Caro ’15 tied for 40th with 82-75—157. The team travels to Rochester for the Liberty League qualifier Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 27-28.

Emily Saliterman ’17 netted four goals in two games to lead women’s soccer to a 2-0 week. She potted her first career hat trick in a 4-0 win against Castleton and scored the game-winning goal in Saturday’s 2-1 win against Plattsburgh. The first goal of the season by Erin Barry ’16 proved to be the game-winner against Castleton and goalkeeper Deidre Walsh ’17 made three saves for her first career shutout. Walsh turned away seven shots against Plattsburgh, improving to 3-0 on the season. The Thoroughbreds (3-3) open Liberty League play with a pair of road games, taking on Union at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 23, and traveling to Vassar Saturday, Sept. 27, for a 2 p.m. contest.

Women’s tennis was dominant in its first two conference matches, sweeping Union and Bard, 9-0. The team didn’t drop a set against Union and lost only one game against Bard. Madie Benn ’17 cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win at number-one singles and combined with Brianna Greene ’18 for an 8-1 win at number-one doubles against the Dutchwomen. Greene rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 win at number-one singles and paired Erica Meno ’18 for an 8-0 win at number-one doubles. Meno was also a 6-0, 6-0 winner at number-three singles against the Raptors. The team competes at the ITA Regionals hosted at Hobart College Saturday through Monday, Sept. 27-29.

The men’s tennis doubles team of Nick Tong ’16 and Steven Koulouris ’18 advanced to the ITA Northeast Region doubles championship, scheduled for Sept. 22. The pair notched an 8-4 win in the quarterfinals before defeating teammates Kit Sanderson ’16 and Lucas Pickering ’18, 8-2, in the semifinals. Sanderson also advanced to the singles quarterfinals, while Koulouris, Max Swerdlick ’17 and Kai Yuen Leung ’17 each made it to the third round. With a win on Monday, Tong and Koulouris would advance to the USTA/ITA National Small College Championships, scheduled Oct. 9-12 at the Palmetto Tennis Center in Sumter, S.C. The team plays its lone Liberty League match of the fall at Bard College at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27

Field hockey topped RPI, 5-2, before suffering its first setback of the season in a 4-1 loss at Utica, snapping an 11-game regular-season winning streak. Sam Skott ’15 had two goals and an assist against RPI, Dani DeGregory ’16 added a pair of goals and Krista Lamoreaux ’17 scored and added an assist. DeGregory extended her point streak to eight games with an assist against Utica and Amy Beck ’15 made a career-high 10 saves. The third-ranked Thoroughbreds (6-1) will look to rebound against two conference opponents, playing at William Smith at 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 26, and at the University of Rochester at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27.

Men’s soccer battled to a 2-2 tie with Plattsburgh after dropping a closely contested 1-0 conference game at No. 14 RPI. Adam Beek ’15 scored his conference-leading fifth goal and Todd Jensen ’16 tallied his first goal of the season against Plattsburgh. Eli Kisselbach ’16 made six saves to help the Thoroughbreds (4-3-1) preserve the tie. The team plays on the road at MCLA at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22, before hosting Liberty League foe Vassar at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27. ~ By Dan St.-Jacques
