Men's soccer squeaks past Williams

Men’s soccer highlighted the Skidmore fall sports week, battling to a 2-1 win against Williams College. Field hockey rebounded from a midweek loss to Middlebury and shut out Nazareth. Volleyball picked up its first conference win of the season, while women’s soccer saw its five-game unbeaten streak come to an end against Middlebury.

Adam Beek ’15 netted two first-half goals, pushing men’s soccer past Williams College, 2-1. Noah Weinberg ’16 recorded his first point of the season, assisting on Beek’s first tally, and Tim Sullivan ’16 produced his third point in as many games with a helper. Eli Kisselbach ’16 made five saves, earning his fifth win of the season. The team plays its final non-conference game of the season at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7, hosting Utica.

Ninth-ranked field hockey bounced back from a midweek setback against No. 4 Middlebury with a 5-0 win at Nazareth. Sam Skott ’15 and Dani DeGregory ’16 gave the Thoroughbreds (7-3) a 2-0 lead against Middlebury, but the Panthers rallied in the second half, scoring three unanswered goals, including two in the final 6:20 to secure the 3-2 win. Amy Beck ’15 kept Skidmore in the game, tying a career-high with 10 saves. Five different players scored goals in the team’s 5-0 win at Nazareth. Becca Halter ’17 scored the only goal the Thoroughbreds would need just 6:30 into the contest. Melanie Webb ’15, Krista Lamoreaux ’17, Skott, Sofia San Marco ’15 and Jenn Hanks ’16 added a goal each and Beck made two saves for her second shutout of the season. The team returns home for a Liberty League contest against St. Lawrence at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11.

Volleyball opened its Liberty League schedule with four matches, notching its first conference win with a 3-1 (25-23, 19-25, 25-23, 25-15) victory against Bard and falling against No. 12 Clarkson, St. Lawrence and Vassar. Brittany Osborn ’17 had a double-double with a team-high 15 kills to go along with 11 digs against Bard. Aria Goodman ’15 added 14 kills and Kalle Fox ’18 continued her steady play with a match-high 35 assists and 10 digs. Marcela Familiar-Bolanos ’17 led the team in digs in three of four matches. The Thoroughbreds (3-15, 1-3 Liberty League) welcome Middlebury at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8.

Women’s soccer’s five-game unbeaten streak was halted by Middlebury, as the Panthers scored three first half goals en route to a 4-0 win. Morgan Governale ’15 had two shots on goal and nearly put the Thoroughbreds (3-4-2) on the board in the 74th minute, but her long-range strike was turned away by the Middlebury goalkeeper. Deidre Walsh ’17 made four saves in the setback. The team returns to conference action at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7, with a home game against Bard. ~ By Dan St.-Jacques
