Fall athletes collect victories

Golf closed out its fall season in style, winning the NYU/Mahanttanville Fall Invitational, and women’s tennis made the most of its final event of the fall, picking up three New York State titles. Women’s soccer shut out two Liberty League opponents to remain undefeated in conference play, while field hockey improved to 9-3 on the season, winning its lone game of the week. Volleyball had an impressive showing at the Union Invitational, going 2-1 and men’s tennis competed at the Wallach Invitational in its final tournament of the fall.

Golf led from start to finish, shooting 301-308—609 to win the NYU/Manhanttanville Fall Invitational by five strokes. Zach Grossman ’15 led the Thoroughbreds with 69-75—144, placing first overall by two strokes. Tim Manwaring ’16 tied for fifth with 73-78—151, four strokes ahead of Mitchell Campbell ’17, who tied for 10th with 78-77—155. The team returns to action at the Jekyll Island Invitational March 13-15, 2015.

Women’s tennis captured three singles titles at the NYS Division III Championships held at Ithaca College—the team’s final event of the fall. Erica Meno ’18 cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win in the championship match at number four, Caroline Finnegan ’18 battled to a 6-4, 4-6, 12-10 win in the finals at number five and Michelle Fuca ’18 notched a 6-1, 7-5 victory in the championship at number six. The team, which was represented in eight of nine championship matches, returns to action Feb. 21, 2015 at RIT.

Women’s soccer recorded back-to-back 1-0 conference wins, topping Bard and Clarkson. Emily Saliterman ’17 netted her team-leading sixth goal and second game-winning goal of the season against Bard and goalkeeper Deirdre Walsh ’17 stopped five shots, earning her third shutout. Morgan Governale ’15 tallied her first goal of the season against Clarkson, lifting the Thoroughbreds (5-4-2, 2-0-2 Liberty League) to the 1-0 win. The team hosts a pair of Liberty League games this weekend, taking on league-leading No. 11 William Smith at 4 p.m., Friday, Oct. 17, before facing RIT at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18.

Field hockey used a four-goal second half to pull away for a 5-1 win over St. Lawrence. Jenn Hanks ’16 gave the team a 1-0 lead in the first half, and Melanie Webb ’15, Dani DeGregory ’16 and Sam Skott ’15 all scored in the opening 13 minutes of the second half to seal the victory. Webb and DeGregory both chipped in a goal and an assist and Seeley Fancher ’18 rounded out the scoring. The 10th-ranked Thoroughbreds (9-3, 3-1 Liberty League), who extended their home conference win streak to 22 games, welcome Williams at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14.

Men’s soccer played to a 2-2 draw with Utica before earning a vital 2-1 road win at Clarkson. Tim Sullivan ’16 scored the opening goal against Utica and set up Brock Bakewell’s ’15 game-tying goal in the 64th minute, while goalkeeper Eli Kisselbach ’16 made four saves. Bakewell’s second goal in as many games put the Thoroughbreds (7-4-2, 1-2 Liberty League) in front against Clarkson and Nick Masiero ’17 put the game out of reach in the 84th minute, chipping the Golden Knights goalkeeper. Clarkson pulled back within one just over two minutes later, but Skidmore withstood the Golden Knights’ attack in the final three minutes, holding on for the 2-1 win. The team goes on the road for a pair of league contests, playing at Hobart at 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17, before travelling to RIT for a 2 p.m. contest on Saturday, Oct. 18.

Volleyball won two of its three matches at the Union Invitational. The team knocked off Laselle, 3-0 (25-16, 25-11, 25-18), before winning a 3-2 marathon match over Bridgewater State (25-19, 27-29, 25-21, 17-25, 15-7). The team dropped its final match of the tournament against Susquehanna. Aria Goodman ’15 was selected to the all-tournament team. She recorded season-highs with 23 kills and 24 digs against Brdigewater, Kalle Fox ’18 had a season-high 50 assists and Clare Kenny ’15 added a season-high 19 digs. The team returns to Liberty League play Oct. 17-18 at RIT.

Lucas Pickering ’18 was the men’s tennis top performer of the week, winning the “C” singles flight at the Wallach Invitational hosted by Bates College. Kai Yuen Leung ’17 advanced to the “B” flight semifinals and the doubles team of Kit Sanderson ’16 and Nick Tong ’16 made it to the “A” flight semifinals, recording 9-8 wins in both the first and second round. The team closes out its fall season Saturday, Oct. 18, at Trinity College. ~ By Dan St.-Jacques
