Field Hockey captures 7th Liberty title

A seventh field hockey Liberty League championship highlighted another strong week for Skidmore athletics. Ice Hockey recorded its first win of the season and swimming and diving took on Vassar in a dual meet.

Field hockey captured its second straight Liberty League title and the program’s sixth in the last seven years with victories over Vassar and William Smith College. Dani DeGregory ’16 netted her program-record 33rd goal of the season in a 4-1 win over Vassar in the semifinals and Sam Revera ’15 scored a pair of goals. DeGregory added a goal and an assist in the championship game against William Smith, setting a new Skidmore record for points in a season with 81 (34 G, 13 A). Krista Lamoreaux ’17 and Sam Skott ’15 chipped in a goal each and goalkeeper Amy Beck ’15 stopped two shots, leading the Thoroughbreds to a 3-0 win. The team earned a first-round bye in the NCAA Division III Championship tournament and will play the winner of Utica and FDU-Florham on Saturday at Bowdoin College.

Ice hockey rebounded from a tough 3-2 overtime loss at the University of New England with a 3-1 win over the University of Southern Maine. Sean Timmons ’18 tallied his first goal of the season against New England and goalie Jack McDonald ’17 turned away 38 shots in the loss. The Thoroughbreds got goals from three freshman in the come-from-behind win over Southern Maine. Connor Pelkey ’18 had a goal and an assist, Christian Leahy ’18 scored his second goal of the season and Mickey Foley ’18 potted the game-winning goal midway through the third period. Ben Freiberg ’16 made 25 saves in his first appearance between the pipes. The team hosts its first home games of the season this weekend, taking on New England College at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14, before facing Saint Anselm College at 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15.

Men’s and women’s swimming and diving competed in a dual meet at Vassar, with both teams suffering setbacks. Yookee Roh ’16 paced the women’s team, winning the 50 free and the 200 back and placing second in the 100 fly. Catherine King ’15 added first-place finishes in the 100 and 200 free.

Nick Sauerbrunn ’15 was the men’s team’s top performer, notching wins in the 200 and 500 free. The team swept the 500 free, as Gabriel Salitan-Alvarez ’17 placed second and Robert Fulton ’15 came in third. Salitan-Alvarez had his best race of the day in the 1000 free, winning by nearly a minute. Jacob Nathan ’15 led the way for the divers, recording wins in the 1-meter and 3-meter events. The Thoroughbreds host a dual meet with Oneonta at 5 p.m., Friday, Nov. 14, and welcome the College of Saint Rose at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15. ~ By Dan St.-Jacques
