Winter Dance Concert to showcase department's rich offerings
The Winter Dance Concert, an evening of dance with choreography by faculty and guest artists of the Skidmore Department of Dance, is scheduled Friday and Saturday, Dec. 5 and 6, in the Dance Theater. Performances are scheduled at 8 p.m. both days, with a 2 p.m. matinee on Dec. 6.
The program features the following selections:
"Winter Solstice" staged by Mary DiSanto-Rose, a suite of works by Isadora Duncan, "the mother of modern dance," and dances inspired by her with music by Gluck and Mendelssohn, performed by 10 dancers.
"Pas De Trois" from Swan Lake, Act I, choreographed by Denise Warner Limoli after Petipa, with music by Tchaikovsky. This is a classical tour de force performed by three advanced ballet dancers.
Debra Fernandez presents a concert version of her recent piece, “Doubling,” which was performed at the Tang Museum in October. The new condensed version, now titled “Doubletrack,” will be performed to music by David Lang, Skidmore’s 2014 McCormack Endowed Visiting Artist.
“Synesthesia,” a work choreographed by Mary Harney and set on eight dancers, is an exploration of color and sound. A condition that can manifest itself in many ways, synesthesia affects multiple senses at the same time. Ultimately, the stimulation of one evokes a sensation in another. In this case, certain sounds create the visualization of specific colors.
“Caffè Lena,” inspired by the famous coffee house, is an excerpt from Harney’s full-length work, “Spirit of Life: 150 Years of Words, Music, and Dance.” Alumnus Michael Rivera ‘14 will perform this jazz-based solo to original music by local composer Elizabeth Woodbury Kasius.
Guest Artist Matt Pardo, dancer with the Lucinda Childs Dance Company, will present “in the hive we are one and many," which explores the concept of individuality within confined parameters and limitations. Minimal and highly kinetic, the piece incorporates evolving movement patterns as a way of emphasizing a community and the individuals within it.
Tickets to the winter dance concert are $10 adults, $5 students and senior citizens. There are no advanced reservations. Tickets are sold 45 minutes prior to each performance. Early arrival enhances seat selection. For information please call ext. 5392.
