Fall athletes embrace season's start with gusto

The fall intercollegiate athletics season is off to a good start with back-to-back wins by the field hockey team, which routed Castleton State College 12-0 and beat Cortland 7-3. Sam Skott ’15 took just over 10 minutes to complete a hat trick against Castleton, finishing the game with four goals. Dani DeGregory ’16 added eight points with three goals and two assists and Krista Lamoreaux ’17 chipped in a goal and three assists. DeGregory tallied a hat trick for the second straight game against the Red Dragons and Melanie Webb ’15 produced two goals and two assists. The team hosts SUNY Geneseo at 12 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6.

Men’s soccer defeated Endicott College 2-1 after nearly erasing a three-goal deficit in a 3-2 loss against No. 9 Montclair State. Trailing 3-0 late in the first half, Brock Bakewell ’15 set up the first goal of the season for Nick Masiero ’17 and found the back of the net just over four minutes later. The Thoroughbreds continued to press in the second half, but could not find the equalizer. Bakewell gave Skidmore a 1-0 lead against Endicott College and Augustine Okoye ’17 netted the game-winner in the 86th minute. The team goes on the road later this week, playing at Potsdam at 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5, and Canton at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6.

Volleyball went 1-2 at the Brockport Invitational, rebounding from a loss against Brockport in the opening match with a 3-1 (24-26, 25-14, 25-17, 25-22) win against Lasell College. The team dropped its final match 3-1 (22-25, 25-22, 17-25, 20-25) against Ithaca College. Kalle Fox ’18 led the way for the Thoroughbreds, producing 19 assists and 12 digs against Brockport, 35 assists and five aces in the Lasell win and 41 assists and 22 digs against Ithaca. Marcela Familiar-Bolanos ’17 had the team-high in digs in all three matches and Aria Goodman ’15 added 36 kills and 42 digs over the three matches. The team travels to Rochester Sept. 5 for the Yellow Jacket Invitational.

Women’s soccer suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 defeat against Rutgers-Newark and fell 1-0 against New Paltz. Lauren Alexander ’15 scored the opening goal against Rutgers-Newark from an Arena Manning ’16 cross, but the Scarlet Raiders tied the game in the second half and scored the winning goal with 16 seconds remaining in regulation. Madison Plummer ’17 made six saves in Saturday’s loss to the Hawks. The team takes on Farmingdale State in its home opener at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6. ~ By Dan St.-Jacques
