Black Box production of "The Penelopiad" upcoming

February 24, 2015

Margaret Atwood’s The Penelopiad is the spring-semester black box production to be staged by the Skidmore Theater Department. Performances are Friday, Feb. 27, through Wednesday, March 4. All shows are in the Janet Kinghorn Bernhard Theater at 8 p.m., except for the Sunday matinee at 2 p.m.

In a splendid contemporary twist on The Odyssey, Atwood has chosen to give a voice to Penelope, wife of Odysseus, and to her 12 maids. In this dazzling, playful retelling, the story becomes as wise and compassionate as it is haunting, and as wildly entertaining as it is unsettling. With wit and verve, drawing on the story-telling and poetic talent for which she renowned, Atwood gives Penelope new life and reality--and sets out to provide an answer to an ancient mystery.

Lily Donahue has the role of Penelope. The play’s director is Emily Moler '15, with scenic design by James Barber '15, lighting design by James Kuzio '15, costume design by Allison Green '15, make-up design by Alyssa Hagerbrant '17, sound design by Margo Chanin '17, original music by Jared Green '15, and original choreography by Madeline Morser '16.

Seating is very limited, so reservations are essential. Contact the Skidmore Theater Box Office at (518) 580-5439 or via email.  For online ticketing refer to Skidmore College Theater on Facebook or theater.skidmore.edu. Tickets are $12 general admission and $8 for students and senior citizens.
