New year and season off to strong start

While classes are just getting underway at Skidmore, the fall sports season is in full swing. Field hockey opened 2015 with a pair of wins, while men’s soccer also got off to a winning start in its season opener. Women’s soccer rebounded from its first loss of the year with a dominant 1-0 win against MCLA and volleyball recorded victories against MCLA and Gordon.

Gabby Hyman ’19 tallied her first two collegiate goals to lead field hockey to a 4-1 win against St. John Fisher in its season-opening game. Krista Lamoreaux ’17 and Kayla Rose ’18 each contributed a goal and Dani DeGregory ’16 chipped in a pair of assists. The fifth-ranked Thoroughbreds improved to 2-0 with a 2-0 win against No. 19 Cortland. DeGregory potted both goals and Zoe McGuire ’18 stopped five shots in goal, earning her first career shutout and marking the first time in 45 games that the Red Dragons were held scoreless. Skidmore travels to Geneseo Saturday, Sept. 12, for a 12 p.m. contest.

Men’s soccer eased past Nazareth, 3-0, in its first game of the season. Adebare Oyeniyi ’17 netted the team’s first goal just 6:57 into the game, Kevin Santos ’18 doubled the lead just over eight minutes later and Brennan Mitrolka ’17 added an insurance goal at 78:13 for the 3-0 final. Eli Kisselbach ’16 posted the shutout in goal, making one save. The Thoroughbreds take on Potsdam in their home opener at 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11.

Women’s soccer bounced back from a season-opening loss against Castleton University with a 1-0 win at MCLA. Emily Saliterman ’17 gave the Thoroughbreds the only goal they would need, converting on a penalty kick in the first half. Deidre Walsh ’17 recorded the shutout in goal. The team dominated play from start to finish, outshooting the Traiblazers 28-4 with a 13-2 edge in corner kicks. Skidmore hosts New Paltz in its home opener at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12.

Volleyball opened the year with a 3-1 win over MCLA. Key contributions came from rookies, as Allie Dillon ’19 had a team-high 29 digs, setter Sam Abrams ’19 added 24 assists and two aces and Caitlyn Sprinkle ’19 contributed a team-high 13 kills. The Thoroughbreds also went 1-3 in their first tournament of the year at the Brockport Invitational, beating Gordon College 3-1, and suffering losses against Ithaca, Brockport, and Houghton. The team competes at the Union Invitational this Friday and Saturday, Sept. 11-12. ~ By Dan St.-Jacques
