A week of films
The next 10 days offer a wide range of films—documentary and feature—on topics designed to appeal to a variety of audiences. Interested in Africa, Latin America, rape on campus, LGBTQ rights, growing up, growing old? Student-made films? Check out the following events and screenings sponsored by the English department, React to Film, and Media and Film Studies, with support from MDOCS.
On Wednesday, Sept. 30, at 5:30 p.m. in Emerson Auditorium, historian Keven Coleman will present “The photos we don’t get to see.”
There is much we can learn from photographs, both those created for public view and those developed for private viewing or institutional purposes. From a case study drawn from the United Fruit Company's early 20th-century activities in Latin America, Coleman offers a lecture and a workshop to help bring these documentary resources into focus and tease out the stories they help reveal.
At 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 29, Davis Auditorium,Call Me Kuchu (2012). The film’s director, Malika Zouhali-Worral, will give a talk at 12:20 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2, in Davis Auditorium.
On Saturday, Oct. 3, at 9:15 a.m. in the Saratoga Springs Civic Center, view Women of '69 Unboxed, followed by a panel discussion titled "From the 60s to your 60s.” Help celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Saratoga Springs Adult and Senior Center with the screening of this film produced by alumna Liz Roman Gallese. A panel featuring Susan Bender, professor emerita of anthropology, with women from the classes of '59, '69 and '79 will follow.
At 5:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 5, in Bolton 282, director/writer Jay Craven screens the 2015 film Peter and John and leads a post-film discussion. Details are here.
At 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6, in Davis Auditorium, React to Film is participating in a nationwide screening of The Hunting Ground, the acclaimed documentary about sexual assault on college campuses. Admission is free and open to the public, and refreshments will be served.
