A sketch of Skidomedy

October 2, 2015

Since 2006, members of Skidomedy have spread laughs on the Skidmore campus and beyond. This year they were accepted to the Peoples Improv Theater’s Sketch Fest in New York City—an opportunity to perform their original and innovative material outside the comfort of a college setting. The club takes pride in its flexible talents: every member pitches ideas, writes sketches, and performs.

Government major and club president Alec Grossman ’16 has connected his academic pursuits with his passion for comedy: “I took a media-and-government course, and my final paper was about the intersection of comedy and politics, especially in elections.” This semester, he is taking an improv comedy class taught by Skidmore alum Rachel Mason ’96, an instructor for the famed Second City troupe in Chicago. In other interdisciplinary endeavors, after his freshman year Grossman co-wrote a play that was accepted into the NYC International Fringe Festival. He also interned with Upright Citizens Brigade.

Along with providing friendship and creative collaboration, “being in Skidomedy has made me a better writer,” Grossman says. “It’s allowed me to find my voice.” —Lisa Fierstein ’16
