Athletes remain competitive; eye post-season play

Skidmore's fall sports teams continued to roll toward the postseason with men’s soccer and field hockey leading the charge. Men’s soccer extended its unbeaten streak to seven with a win and a tie and field hockey pushed its win streak to five, clinching a Liberty League playoff berth with a pair of conference wins. Men’s and women’s tennis were both well represented at the USTA/ITA National Small College championships and volleyball picked up its second conference win of the season. Women’s soccer will look to bounce back this weekend with the possibility of clinching a postseason spot when it hosts St. Lawrence.

MEN’S SOCCER (9-2-1, 4-0 Liberty League)

LAST WEEK’S RESULTS

No. 22 Skidmore 2, Utica 1 (OT)

No. 22 Skidmore 0, Ithaca 0

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Skidmore extended its unbeaten streak to seven with a win at Utica and a tie against Ithaca.
  • Austin Okoye ’18 scored his second game-winning goal in as many games in the team’s 2-1 overtime win against Utica.
  • Ben Caples ’19 recorded his sixth assist of the season on Okoye’s goal, tying him for first in the Liberty League.
  • Goalkeeper Eli Kisselbach ’16 stopped three shots against Ithaca, earning his seventh shutout of the season and his fifth in the last six games.
  • The team ranked 22nd in the most recent National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) national rankings, making its first appearance in the national rankings since 2006.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Skidmore’s 8-0 win against St. Lawrence was the 300th career win for head coach Beth Hallenbeck, making her the 16th coach in Division III history to reach the mark.
  • Dani DeGregory ’16 compiled a total of 18 points in the team’s two victories, scoring seven goals and adding four assists.
  • Krista Lamoreaux ’17 had a season-high four points (1G, 3A) against Vassar, also contributing a goal against the Saints.
  • Grace Florsheim ’19 produced her first career two-goal game against the Brewers.
  • Jenn Hanks ’16 had a season-high five points against Vassar with two goals and an assist.
  • Shannon Sebor ’16 had a goal and an assist and St. Lawrence and dished out two helpers against Vassar.
  • The team has won 29 consecutive Liberty League home games.

USTA/ITA National Small College Championships (Sumter, S.C.)

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Kai Yuen Leung ’17 and Nick Tong ’16 finished fourth at the USTA/ITA National Small College Championships.
  • Leung and Tong advanced to the semifinals after beating a team from Johns Hopkins in their opening match.
  • Leung finished fifth in the singles championships, beating defending champion and second seed Nicholas Chua of Chicago, 6-4, 6-3 for fifth.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Michelle Fuca ’18 and Madie Benn ’17 finished fifth in the USTA/ITA National Small College Doubles Championship.
  • The pair battled to a 4-6, 6-4, 10-6 win against Marie Lutz and Liza Southwick of Trinity for fifth place.
  • Fuca and Benn cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win against Coran and Ho of Washington University in their first consolation match.

  • Marcela Familiar-Bolaños ’17 had a team-high 24 digs against RIT.
  • Caite Canfield ’19 had a double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs to go along with three aces and three blocks against the Tigers.
  • Bailey Hutchins ’19 had a double-double against RIT and Bard, registering 10 digs and 11 assists against the Tigers and 11 digs and 12 assists against the Raptors.
  • Rachel Licata ’18 had a team-high three blocks against both Union and Vassar.

  • Alyssa Rollins ’18 made six saves against third-ranked Williams in her first start of the season.
  • The team dominated play against Farmingdale, outshooting the Rams 11-9 and owning a 5-2 advantage in corners, but it could not find the winning goal.
