Theater Department to present "Macbeth"
A bold new production of the Shakespeare classic, Macbeth, is the fall 2015 main stage production of the Skidmore Department of Theater.
Performances are scheduled Friday through Sunday, Nov. 20-22, and Thursday through Sunday, Dec 3-6, at the Janet Kinghorn Bernhard Theater. All shows begin at 8 p.m. except Sundays, when there is a 2 p.m. matinee.
Author, feminist media critic, and artist-in-residence Holly L. Derr directs, and gives the immortal classic and dreaded theatrical “bad luck charm” a new life in this bold, gender-bending production of Macbeth. In a world of witches, war, and madness, Macbeth and his cunning wife will stop at nothing to hold the throne of Scotland. The price of power, however, is greater than they predicted—paranoia, madness, and an army led by the strongest warrior in the land, determined to restore the King’s daughter to her throne.
Said Derr, “Macbeth is generally thought of as being about ambition, but really it 's about so much more. In our production, we complicate questions about the nature of gender, pointing at Shakespeare's underlying theme and reflecting the way gender functions in our more-complicated world. We're also using some pretty cool SFX to highlight Shakespeare's use of the supernatural as a storytelling device and a way of exploring questions about mortality, nature, and time.”
Tickets are $12 general admission and $8 for students and senior citizens. For reservations, email or call the Skidmore Theater Box Office at (518) 580-5439.
