From last time: Radioheads? Todd Pantezzi '91 recognizes Kevin Polakoff '93, seated at the studio console of WSPN radio, 91.1 FM, in the basement of Jonsson Tower. "If memory serves, he took over as station director in about 1990. I'd been the previous program manager. Kevin had a great show and was a great WSPN leader." He adds, "I miss the room full of LPs, at the left in the photo."

Janine Przybylinski Buckner '93 also fondly recalls WSPN's old LPs. She says, "As
DJ's and executive board members, we made a pivotal move to incorporate a new technology:
CD players. We were so proud of the collection of vinyl in our library, yet we wanted
to be in on the new tech wave. "
Don Jones '94 provides definitive IDs: Polakoff at right, himself at left. At that
time, he says, "I was probably the music director and Kevin was the general manager."
Matt Kavet '94 recognizes the duo and says, "I guest-DJ'd with a friend who had his
own afternoon show. I remember all the public-service announcement tapes (we mostly
played the one that gave advice on chlamydia) and the phone that we answered when
people called in requests—when we were on the air, a giant strobe light would go off
to let us know the phone was ringing."
Judy Allen '69 also recognizes the "campus radio station," and Ellen Sprouls '82 remembers
it "in the lower level of the dining hall building" (which is actually next door to
its Jonsson Tower basement home). Radio pro Roger LaMay '75 recalls, "I was the first
general manager of WSPN as an FM station" and adds, "I have hosted WSPN station managers
at annual WXPN music conferences."
Buckner calls the '90s "a great time for the radio station. We had tons of support
and an awesome team of DJs, revitalized the underwriting program, and co-sponsored
top acts to perform on campus (for instance, Phish, Blues Traveler, and Ani DiFranco
before she went big). Some of the best parts of my being at Skidmore were SPN-related!"
She adds, "My daughter is applying this year, and she wants to get involved with WSPN,
too. Thanks for the blast!"
Belated bonus:Scope regrets missing these answers to a previous "Who, What, When" photo of a parade float from the 1940s or '50s:
Lois Fugarini Yanagi '51 believed it was "the fall weekend of 1950." She said, "I
was part of this singing group, the Skiddenpoofs. It was after this parade that we
had a contest, and somebody came up with the name 'Sonneteers,' since there were 14
in the group. That's how the Sonneteers began."
Jane Walsh Berry '53 recognized "the person in front at the right: Betty Prescott
'51. I went to a collegiate school with her. I haven't seen her in over 60 years,
but I did recognize her."
