Thoroughly Thoroughbred

May 18, 2016

Some of Skidmore's best athletes were toasted for their accomplishments on (and off) the field at Sports Recognition Night this month. But to truly understand what it means to be a Thoroughbred, you’d have to ask a Senior. So, we did.

Here's what six Senior award winners had to say about their time in green and yellow.

, men's basketball: Scholar Athlete Award.

"The privilege to represent Skidmore as a Thoroughbred has been incredible. I've met people and gone places that I never would have otherwise. The faculty, staff, and community embraced us and we embraced them. The inclusivity has changed me and made me a better person."

Shelby Hanlon

, women's soccer: Leadership Award.

"Being a Thoroughbred athlete has given me a family and support system that I don't know what I would have done without. I was part of something larger than myself and gained a sense of what it means to be a leader, a sister, and a best friend."

Erik Sanders

, men's basketball: Senior Athlete Award.

"No one expects to leave behind a legacy. But we won back-to-back championships. Getting to cut down the net in your own gym is something not a lot of players can say they did—I got to do it twice. That's the legacy I'll leave behind."

Emily Mangan

, softball: Scholar-Athlete Award.

"I started in left field. I moved to right, then third base, then second, and finished playing back in right. Even when I wasn't the best player on the field, it just made me strive to be better—for myself and for my team. I wouldn’t change a thing.”

Mario Hyman
Mario Hyman,
men’s soccer and swimming: Senior Athlete Award.

"When we beat St. Lawrence, which was undefeated for quite some time, winning by 1-0 at home in front of our fans and alumni, it was amazing. Everyone rushed the field and swarmed us. I didn't know half of the people around me, but I felt like a champion."

Dani Degregory
Dani DeGregory
, field hockey and softball: Senior Athlete Award.

“Meeting my field hockey team in preseason gave me 25 friends I could turn to even before my first day of class. The T'breds went to the Final Four in my sophomore year, and it was great to go, but sharing that experience with my team is what I'll remember most."

Skidmore's Senior athletes are also among the best students in their class. Read more to see some of the College's highest-achieving students and to learn what success already looks like for the Class of 2016.
