"Excentric Gyratory" dedication

October 13, 2016

Double L Excentric Gyratory VII, by renowned sculptor George Rickey, will be formally welcomed to campus Saturday, Oct. 15, at 11:30 a.m., just outside Skidmore's Tang Museum. The large, polished-metal mobile was a gift from the estate of Susan Rabinowitz Malloy '45, an artist and a Skidmore benefactor.

The dedication ceremony will include remarks by Skidmore President Philip A. Glotzbach; Joan Layng Dayton '63, former trustee and past chair of the Tang’s National Advisory Council; Ian Berry, the Tang's Dayton Director; and Jennifer Malloy Combs, Susan Malloy's daughter.

Malloy was an early supporter of Skidmore's project to build a teaching museum in the 1990s, and when the Tang opened in 2000 a wing was named in her honor. In 2005, Malloy endowed the Tang's curator position. Earlier she funded the Malloy Visiting Artist Series, bringing top contemporary artists to speak on campus each year. As far back as 1969 she helped create the Skidmore Arts Committee, acquiring and evaluating items for the College's permanent collection.

George Rickey (1907–2002) was an American artist whose kinetic sculptures earned him international acclaim. He lived in East Chatham, N.Y., from 1960 until his death, and he taught at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute for six years, retiring in 1966. His Two Lines Oblique was installed at the Empire State Plaza in Albany in 1971.

Skidmore's Double L Excentric Gyratory VII (1994) features two large Ls on swivels; a breeze may stir a lazy rotation of them, while a stronger wind can make them spin and twirl. For a glimpse of the mobile, watch the installation video below:
