Anniversary of loss

November 1, 2016, marks a very difficult anniversary for the Skidmore community. It was one year ago that Michael Hedges, a member of the Class of 2019, died after being hit by a car on Halloween night. Though he had just begun his first year at Skidmore, Michael showed great promise academically and made many strong connections with his peers and faculty during his time on campus.

Skidmore organized several events to provide opportunities for fellowship, quiet reflection and support in ways that meet both individual and collective needs. Last week there was a bonfire and a memorial tree-planting with therapy dogs. Tomorrow—Tuesday, Nov. 1—at 7:30 p.m., a candle-lighting event will be held at Wilson Chapel. Also in the chapel on Friday, Nov. 4, at 2 p.m., the Counseling Center presents "Grief, Loss and Life," a program supported by Saratoga Hospice Bereavement Services to explore managing anniversaries of loss, common reactions, and healing through creativity.

For other resources, students are encouraged to contact the Counseling Center (580-5555), Health Services (580-5550), the Office of Religious and Spiritual Life (580-8340), the Dean of Students Office (580-5760), or the Student Government Association.
