Stewart’s funds arts events on campus

Skidmore announces the Stewart’s Signature Series—campus performances made possible by a grant from Stewart’s Shops and the Dake family (which includes alumna Susan Law Dake ’71). Top names in jazz, dance, radio, and theater will appear on Skidmore stages this summer.

The first date in the Stewart’s Signature Series will be Saturday, May 13: The a cappella jazz-fusion group Manhattan Transfer will offer a concert at 8 p.m. in Arthur Zankel Music Center. With all its accolades, awards, and albums, the group is renowned for its musicianship and exciting live shows. Tickets are on sale at skidmore.edu/zankel.

Friday, June 2, and Saturday, June 3, the Suzuki Company of Toga, from Japan, will present its version of Euripides’ The Trojan Women. Curtain times are 7:30 p.m. in Bernhard Theater; see skidmore.edu/zankel for ticketing. Tadashi Suzuki’s method of actor training has spread around the world, including to Saratoga, where he and Anne Bogart co-founded the SITI workshops that will celebrate their 25th campus residency this summer.

Thursday, June 15, brings a performance by Stephen Petronio Company. The show begins at 7:30 p.m. at Zankel Music Center; for tickets, visit skidmore.edu/zankel. The winner of Bessie and other major awards, Petronio is a leading dance-maker of his generation, blending new music, visual art, and fashion in works that have appeared all over the world. At Skidmore, he and visual artist Janine Antoni are this year’s McCormack Visiting Artists and co-creators of the Tang Museum’s Entangle exhibition. The Petronio Company will be in residence to lead  Skidmore's annual summer dance workshop June 4–24.

Public radio’s Selected Shorts will be live on campus July 22, at 7:30 p.m. at Zankel Music Center. For tickets, visit skidmore.edu/zankel. Heard on more than 150 stations nationwide, the show features great stage and screen actors reading aloud powerful short stories by top authors. The Skidmore performance will coincide with the 2017 New York State Summer Writers Institute, a workshop with renowned writers that has been hosted on campus for many years.  

Additional events will be announced in the coming weeks.

Noting that “Saratoga Springs is blessed with a wide array of live interactive entertainment,” Susan Dake ’71, president of the Stewart’s Foundation, says the series will reinforce Skidmore as a cultural resource for the community. Stewart’s Shops chair, Bill Dake, adds, “Stewart’s and the Dake family are proud to support Skidmore’s contribution to Saratoga’s arts community.”
