Barbara Beck, associate vice president for finance and administration and director of human resources, and Alena Llorens-Myers, assistant director for training and development and project management, hosted the opening session of the Capital Region Human Resources Association (CRHRA) HR Leadership Program in mid-September. Skidmore has been chosen as the site to kick-off this program since its inception in 2006.

This year, as part of the program John Evert, supervisor, operations/HR/payroll in dining services, and Liz Lorenzo, cook and UPSEU chief shop steward, conducted a tour of Murray-Aikins Dining Hall for participants, emphasizing the unique elements of working in higher education, the importance of strong labor-management relationships, and the support they offer to our students. Beck gave a presentation titled “How HR Can Deliver Strategic Contributions to the Organization,” and Llorens-Myers delivered a talk on “Higher Education—Unique Elements, Rewards, Opportunities and Future Issues.”

The HR Leadership Program includes a competitive application process and has graduated 56 alumni from a broad range of organizations around the Capital Region.

Llorens-Myers is a graduate of the CRHRA Leadership class of 2009, and Saytra Green, assistant director for labor relations, is a participant in this year’s program.

The CRHRA HR Leadership Program introduces participants to leaders in the Capital Region Human Resource community who address core HR leadership competencies as well as the unique challenges HR faces in various industries.

Victor Cahn, professor emeritus of English, is the author of two new plays about academic life: A Dish for the Gods and Sheepskin. Published by Steele Spring Stage Rights, A Dish for the Gods has been called “a strong love letter to complex women” by reviewsoffbroadway.blogspot.com; while Sheepskin presents “a comic portrait of male vanity, female manipulation, and the academic environment in which such exploitation may flourish.”

David Domozych, professor of biology, is author of chapter titled "Cell Wall Evolution and Diversity" in the new book, Polysaccharides, edited by K.G. Ramawat and J.M. Meriilon and published by Springer International Publishing. The chapter describes our current understanding of algal cell wall carbohydrates and proteins and their roles in food, pharmaceuticals and biofuels.

David Porter, president emeritus, was volume editor for the publication of Willa Cather’s novel Lucy Gayheart for the series of Cather Scholarly Editions. He contributed the 100+ page “Historical Essay,” helped choose the illustrations, and contributed to the extensive explanatory notes on the text of the novel. As with all such scholarly editions, the book was vetted by the Modern Language Association to ensure that it meets the association's primary objectives:  the collation of a meticulously edited version of the text itself, along with information on the variants, later authorial changes; a historical essay that largely avoids issues of interpretation so as to fix on as full a survey as possible of the varied materials, events, and persons that fed into the book’s creation; and explanatory notes on a broad range of materials that appear in the text. The project started in 2009; the book appeared about a month ago and is available from University of Nebraska Press and Amazon, among other outlets. More information available here
