Skidmore in China
Housing in Shanghai

Housing is an important component of the overall study abroad experience. As a program participant, you will be expected to adapt to your accommodations and to respect the cultural context in which you are living. Students may elect to share an apartment at the Tonghe International Student Village, which is home to many international students, or to reside in a home stay with a Chinese family.

The apartments are wired for high-speed Internet access and the facility includes a lounge and kitchen. Students who elect to reside in an apartment may opt to stay with a Chinese family for a short period during the semester. There are home stay placements available throughout Shanghai for students who have a strong commitment to cultural integration in China and who are prepared to give up some freedom and privacy in order to experience Chinese family life. Students with strong motivation and adequate communication skills in Chinese are encouraged to consider this unique option.

Students in the apartments may take their meals at the university cafeteria or prepare their own meals in shared kitchens. Students may also take advantage of the many small, inexpensive, privately-operated restaurants near the campus and throughout Shanghai. Students living in home stays are provided with two meals a day by their host family (breakfast and dinner), seven days a week.
