Frequently Asked Questions

How are approved programs selected?
The approved programs structure was introduced in 2005 and reviewed by the CEPP subcommittee, the Advisory Committee on International Studies (ACIS) currently known as the Advisory Committee on Off-Campus Programs (ACOP). All approved programs are vetted and approved by Skidmore Department Chairs and Program Directors. All programs are continually reviewed by OCSE in consultation with ACOP. Programs are chosen for approval based on academic rigor, relevant coursework, quality of on-site support, and diversity of opportunities. If you are interested in learning more about this process, please contact OCSE.

Who approves the coursework for credit from study abroad?
The approval of the coursework taken off-campus is at the discretion of each Department Chair and Program Director. Once approved, all students need their coursework reviewed and approved by their academic advisor as well. All academic advisors receive a copy of their student's course approval form once the student has been approved for participation.

What's the difference between a Skidmore program and an Approved program?
We currently have eight programs considered as Skidmore programs. They include: London FYE, Skidmore in London, The Shakespeare Programme, Skidmore in Paris: Advanced Studies, Paris Fall Seminar, Skidmore in Paris: Arts & Business, Skidmore in Spain (Madrid & Alcalá), and Skidmore in China (Beijing & Shanghai). All of these programs, with the exception of Skidmore in London, are transcripted as Skidmore credit and all grades count towards the students cumulative and term GPA.

How many off-campus programs can the student apply to?
Students may only apply to one off-campus program. If they are concerned about competitiveness, they should consult with a Program Manager in OCSE regarding their options.

How do I assist a student in selecting a program?
Our search tools on the OCSE website can filter programs by both major and location. You can find information at http://www2.skidmore.edu/ocse/search/. You can discuss what courses your student will need to fulfill while studying off-campus, which often helps narrow the student's program options. We also have advisors and Program Managers on hand to answer any specific questions you or your student may have regarding their program options. We have walk-in advising every Monday-Friday from 1pm-4pm. Please encourage your student to come and speak with us, we are happy to help!

Is there a specific form to fill out as an academic reference?
Unfortunately, not at this time. Every program has different requirements for their academic references and a single form cannot be used for all of these purposes. Your student should work with their Skidmore Program Manager or approved program provider to give you the proper information and appropriate deadline to write an academic recommendation. If you are writing a letter for a student petition (GPA, non-approved program, non-junior standing), you may email our general account at ocse@skidmore.edu

What are the primary requirements for my advisee to study abroad?
Students must have at least a 3.0 GPA and have declared their major. Sophomores and Seniors are required to submit a petition and graduation plan to be considered by the Committee on Academic Standing (CAS) for approval. Students are strongly advised to complete their all-college requirements prior to departing on their respective program.

Are credits and grades calculated toward the Skidmore degree?
Students will earn transfer credits on all approved off-campus study programs. The grades will show on their official transcript, but will not impact their term or cumulative GPA. Students must earn at least a "C" or above in order for credits to transfer. On Skidmore programs, with the exception of Skidmore in London, credits and grades are transferred and do impact their term and cumulative GPA.

How are approved programs evaluated and how do I apply to do an approved program site evaluation?
