Introduction To Painting And Drawing
An introduction to the various techniques used in painting and drawing which focus on two dimensional surfaces. The classes include lectures on color, shape and texture as well as exercises to develop control in freehand drawing. The completion of projects is required as there are critiques by the professor as well as other students. There are class sessions and individual appointments to learn and later improve one's knowledge and skills of painting and drawing.

Study of the different techniques involved in engraving. Etched-plate engraving, cut engraving, sketches, pen drawings, transplating form to lines, preparations, varnishes, types and uses of acids, correcting and retouching, study of nuances, natural stamping, zinc paltes, depth of lines, errors.

Analysis of visual reality: form-drawing from live models (proportion, contrast of light and shadow), traditional techniques (charcoal, stump, etc.): color-how to represent the reality observed with color. Oil paints. Free expression: plastic interpretation of the observed models disconnected from the model (accent on synthesis, use of flat color, disfuration of the form, etc). Techniques studied include oilds, acrylics, watercolors, sands, adhesive materials, etcx, in search of expressive qualities.

The beginner´s course includes an introduction to clay and its characteristics, firing techniques, basic techniques for making ceramics, different manual methods, decoration, glaze formulation, throwing techniques.

The advanced course works on the following different types of clay and their composition, different types of kilns, influence of the atmosphere and temperatures in firing, different methods of making pieces, different types and composition of glazes, glazes with high and low temperatures, metallic glow, decoration of pieces, glazed tiles, use of the potter´s wheel for complex forms.
