Skidaiko

Skidaiko

Though drumming in Japan is centuries old, taiko as we know it today was started in the 1950s, and since then has spread to many parts of the world. The student club, Skidaiko was started several years ago by a student who studied with the oldest taiko dojo in the U.S., San Francisco Taiko Dojo. Skidaiko performs traditional Japanese pieces as well as pieces created by our own students. Skidaiko has embraced Skidmore's culture of "Creative Thought Matters" in making our own drums out of PVC pipe and drum leather.

In joining Skidaiko for pre-orientation, we provide you with the opportunity to learn the basics of taiko drumming, including form, choreography, the traditional beats, and even several of our performance pieces. There will be opportunities to be involved in every part of Skidaiko, from drum-making, to composing, to learning and potentially even to performing for your peers at the Club Showcase.

Skidaiko is open to everyone and requires absolutely no previous experience in drumming. What we do require is an open mind, creativity, and a willingness to have fun.
