Getting organized and Creating a User Account
Step 1: Take
time to review the information included in your packet and familiarize
yourself with the organization of the New Student Registration
Guide and College Catalog before you begin the registration
process. You should have already received information on how
to create a user name and password that will be used for both email
and access to the Skidmore Student System. If you have not created
a user name and password, please click
here.
Taking care of business - please proceed through
this process one step at a time
Step 2: Print
and complete the Application
for Academic Accommodations and return it as soon as possible
with appropriate documentation to The Office of Student Academic Services if
you believe you are eligible to receive academic accommodations
based on a documented disabling condition.
Please see the Student Academic Services (SAS) web site for additional information.
Step 3: Advising:
June 4th - 18th
a) In early June, you will receive a phone call or an email
from a College representative who has been assigned to assist you
this summer as you select your classes. This person will speak with
you about how to tackle the course selection process and how to
identify a variety of academic options. Please schedule a time to
work with your summer mentor between June 4 and June 18.
b) In preparation for speaking with your summer
mentor, login to the Skidmore College web page and navigate to http://cms.skidmore.edu/fye/.
This is your starting point when connecting to Skidmore web resources.
Review the Scribner Seminar course descriptions carefully, jotting
down any questions you may have for your mentor.
c) Next, cross reference the Scribner Seminar
descriptions with the Registrar’s Office list of Courses
Open to First Year Students in order to determine the days and
times of each offering. You and your summer mentor will want to
discuss which of the seminars will engage you intellectually and
personally. Be prepared to select and rank ten of the seminar topics, since all students will
not be able to enroll in their first choices.
Step 4: Selecting Your
Top Ten Scribner Seminar Choices: June 4th - 18th
Navigate to the Scribner
Seminar Selection form. You may enter your selections and make
changes from June 4 through June 18 . After that
date, your choices will be frozen. We will select a seminar for
you, based on your choices. We will attempt as best we can to honor
every student’s top choices, but we cannot guarantee that
we will be able to do that for 100% of the class. Please be prepared
to be flexible and adventurous. All of the seminars are excellent
options – you will not be disappointed.
Step 5: Registering
for Your Remaining Classes: June 23rd - July 13th
Review the Student System Features
a) Before you begin enrolling, we ask that you take a little bit of time to work through the registration resources located off the Registrar's Office web page at:
Quick Registration Guide
OR
More detailed information here
b) In addition, review the materials enclosed in the Registration
Packet, checking on suggestions for a first semester schedule made
by each department in the Guide and reviewing course descriptions
included in the College
Catalog. You can refer to the Courses
Open to First Year Students to begin preparing a rough draft
of a list of courses you may wish to enroll in following your conversation
with your mentor. Fill out the Registration Worksheet, including
the call number for each section. This will help
speed things up for you when you are enrolling.
c ) Check your Timeslot and Login to the System
Beginning on June 23rd, new students will
be allowed to login to the Skidmore Student System. Your timeslot
has been designated based on a random sample of the class, and is
listed on the registration materials included in your packet. You
may begin the process on that day or any day after the designated
date through July 13th. However, we do suggest that you complete the registration process as soon as possible. When you enter the system,
you will see your Scribner Seminar already in place. You will then
begin to select other classes, based on the conversation you had
with your summer mentor, your reading of the materials enclosed
in the Registration Packet, and reference to the Courses
Open to First Year Students which will show the open/closed
status of each section.
Please Note: Your schedule may be subject
to change in rare but necessary situations. You will be contacted
if a change needs to be made.
Placement Information:
Chemistry placement: Students who are planning to register for a general chemistry course for science majors should take an online, chemistry diagnostic exam that can be accessed by visiting the homepage of the Chemistry Department at www.skidmore.edu/academics/chemistry . The results of this exam are used to help faculty advise students whether to take CH 105, Chemical Principles I, or CH 107H, Intensive General Chemistry Honors. More information about the exam can be found by visiting the web site or contacting Steven Frey , Chair of the Chemistry Department (e-mail: sfrey@skidmore.edu , phone: 518-580-5124).
Calculus placement: Skidmore offers several levels of calculus. Unfortunately, students may choose a course that is too advanced and end up doing poorly. On the other hand, an experienced student who takes a basic level calculus course may end up bored with the class and will learn very little new material. The Placement Exam is a tool that helps the department advise students which calculus course is best suited for them. The exam is located at http://www.skidmore.edu/academics/mcs/mcs-calcExam/index.htm
English: Refer to the Placement Information
sheet in your packet noting your placement in EN 103, EN 105,
or EN 105H. Click
here for EN 105 topic descriptions.
Foreign Language: If you plan to continue
your previous study of French, Spanish, or German, you must take
the online
placement exam to determine which level of the course
to take at Skidmore. You will need your Skidmore ID# located on
the Placement Information sheet in your packet.
Registration for
Music Ensembles will be completed following an audition in September.
Please click
here to inform the Music Department of your interest in an
Ensemble or if you will be signing up for Private Music Instruction.
In the system:
-
The Skidmore Student System access point is located on the Registrar's Office site. Simply click on the Starting Gate graphic marked ' Login' and then enter the user name and password determined in Step 1.
-
Click on the link that says 'Schedule Fall 2008 UG Enrollment Now Open'
-
Click on the Quick Add button, enter course's call number(s) and click 'Apply'. The course(s) will go directly to your schedule unless you receive a warning or error message. You must delete the courses in question before proceeding.
-
If you do not know the call number you can click the 'Search and Add' button.
-
Repeat this process until you have finished your registration (between 14 - 16 credits is ideal). If you need to search for additional offerings you may do so within the system or by opening the web page that includes the Courses Open to First Year Students and using that as a guide.
Always verify your schedule and make sure the course status says 'Enrolled'
Note: Some
sections will inevitably close. If you wish to put your name on
a wait list, you may do so – but you are limited to three waitlists.
Also, please note that you may not waitlist in a class if you have
a seat in another section of that same class. Being on a waitlist does not constitute enrollment, you are simply waiting for a seat to become available. Do enroll for alternatives - only up to 18 credits, otherwise you will not be automatically enrolled off a waitlist.
If you run into any difficulties, you may call
the Registrar’s Office at (518)580-5710 during regular business
hours (8:30AM-Noon, 1-4PM) Monday through Friday or email registrar@skidmore.edu
Someone will try to assist you with either technical issues or academic
questions.
You can find additional resources on the Registrar's New Students page.
