MINI COLLEGE
Against Identity Politics

Robert Boyers, Professor in English and Editor of Salmagundi
One of the more controversial issues in American political life is "identity politics." On college campuses around the country it often divides people and even pits against one another professors and students who otherwise find themselves in agreement on most other topics. This mini-college class will focus on the origins of the term and on the disputes that continue to seem relevant. Why, we shall ask, do many people continue to believe that a person's identity has principally to do with race, or gender, or sexual orientation, or social class? Why do many people continue to speak of "diversity" without understanding what it means?  Why has "identity politics" had a continuing influence in our society in spite of the great harm it has done? Participants will be invited to consider these and related matters.

MINI COLLEGE
Science Initiative

Karen Kellogg, Kimberley Fredrick, Associate Professor of Chemistry
Join us to hear the significant strides made over the past year in the planning for new and renovated physical and life science facilities at Skidmore College. The presentation will include an overview of the history of the sciences at Skidmore, our current strengths, and the design for our future science facilities, which both embodies and supports the vision for the sciences at Skidmore. We will share some examples of the innovative spaces that will help us more fully immerse our students in the hands-on process of science and also foster the creative interdisciplinary collaborations that are the fabric of Skidmore and a distinctive characteristic of Skidmore Science. As you’ll see, our program also reaches well beyond the sciences by committing to spaces that will invite participation from the entire community. The external building views we will review during the presentation speak both to the role of the sciences in the liberal arts and Skidmore’s place among the top liberal arts schools in the country. For those of us engaged in this design work on campus, the transformational potential of this project becomes more evident each and every day, and we are simply thrilled by our progress. We very much look forward the opportunity to update you on our efforts.

MINI COLLEGE
The Liberal 1950s

Jennifer Delton, Professor of History
We generally consider the 1950s to be a conservative, narrow, repressive era, marked by anti-Communist hysteria, increased defense spending, and the curtailment of New Deal programs. In actuality, however, the 1950s may well have been the pinnacle of American liberalism. During the 1950s, the U.S. government redistributed wealth, taxed the rich, intervened in corporate practices, engaged in public works projects, and generally carried out a New Deal agenda. While historians assume that the warfare state cancelled out the New Deal’s welfare state, I would argue that in fact the Cold War enabled, fulfilled, and even surpassed the New Deal’s reform agenda.
