A Walk through Skidmore’s First Home in Downtown Saratoga

Bob Jones, Associate Professor and Chair of Economics, with Heather Moore ‘08
Skidmore’s downtown campus had its beginnings in 1903 and eventually consisted of more than 80 buildings.  A medley of classroom buildings, offices and dorms along Circular, Regent, Spring and Phila streets as well as Union Avenue became the home to the Lucy Scribner Campus for more than half a century.  This presentation consists of historic maps and photographs in the form of a virtual tour of the Scribner Campus as it was prior to 1969.  Excerpts will be taken from the presenters’ recently published book on the Scribner Campus entitled, The Architect of Necessity: Skidmore’s First Home in Downtown Saratoga which is available at the Skidmore Shop.

Someday is Now: The Art of Corita Kent

Tang Museum Tour and Art making workshop
Come to the Tang Museum for a guided tour of the Tang's landmark exhibition Someday is Now: The Art of Corita Kent. See over 200 works by Corita Kent (1918–1986) followed by an art making project in the spirit of Kent's work. A teacher at Immaculate Heart College in Los Angeles and a civil rights, feminist, and anti-war activist, Corita Kent was one of the most popular artists of the 1960s and 1970s. Throughout her rich and varied career, she made thousands of works that combine faith and politics with exuberant colors and revolutionary graphic design. Kent’s collaborative approach to art-making—combining faith, politics, and teaching with messages of acceptance and hope—continues to be a potent influence for many artists working today. This event is hosted by the Tang’s National Advisory Council.

Locke’s errors: Why Left and Right are both beside the point!

Sheldon Solomon, Professor of Psychology
I will argue that liberal and conservative thought is directly and indirectly influenced by ideas of John Locke, based on erroneous assumptions about human nature, resulting in political philosophies that are both (i.e., left and right) intellectually deficient and morally bankrupt. I will then propose a political philosophy based on an evolutionary existential view of human nature.

“Nobody Likes Her Very Much”:  The President, the Congress, and Why You Still Can’t Hurry Love

Ron Seyb, Professor of Government
The framers engineered the American political system to create friction between the President and the Congress that would spawn “deliberations” between the two branches governed by “the mild voice of reason.”  Few people would suggest that there was anything mild or reasonable about the relations between President Obama and Congress during the former’s first term.  This talk will, first, try to explain why the interactions between President Obama and Congress have been so choleric and, second, assess some of the more prominent proposals for both reducing the invective hurled by and increase the cooperation between the two branches.
