From canvassing in dorms and tabling in Case to root beer floats and "Watch Parties," various Skidmore students joined together to get out the vote. Over the past month the Student Government Association embarked upon the corny but ambitious goal of "0.8 in '08." According to the U.S. Census Bureau, only 58% of U.S. citizens between the ages of 18-24 were registered to vote in the 2004 Presidential election, and of those only 47% voted (that means only 27% of college-age citizens voted in 2004). In the same election, of the 600+ registered Skidmore students, around 50% of students showed up to cast a ballot in the ICC. The goal of "0.8 in '08" was monumental in the sense that it called for 80% of registered Skidmore voters to vote! I'm pleased to say that 84.1% of Skidmore students who were registered to vote on campus did this past Tuesday! There was even a write-in vote for President Glotzbach... Anyway, I just wanted to pass along the info and say how honored I am to be a part of an institution with that percentage. It's truly remarkable!
In addition to sending my best, I also wanted to extend an invitation to an Open Forum with President Glotzbach tomorrow. The President will be addressing students about the current state of the economy and how it affects YOU. From financial aid and the college budget to finding your first job and buying books, anything is up for discussion! PLEASE take a minute to drop by. The event will take place tomorrow, Monday, November 10th at 5:30PM in Emerson Auditorium. Representatives from Career Services, Financial Aid, and On-Campus Employment will be present. Hope to see you there!
And, as always, if you need anything/have something to discuss please shoot me an email or drop by the SGA Office.
