2013-14 Speakers' Bureau

Chair:

Rebecca Stern

Our Mission: Skidmore College Student Speakers’ Bureau provides guidance to student clubs and organizations in the planning, organizing, and publicizing of lectures. The Student Speakers’ Bureau provides funds to student clubs and organizations for the purpose of bringing speakers to Skidmore. We support interesting, educational, diverse, and thoughtful speakers of all kinds as proposed by other student groups. A small portion of the budget is also reserved for the Speakers’ Bureau to bring a special keynote speaker to campus in the fall.

Notable past keynote speakers:

Dave Eggers, Ira Glass, Mo Rocca, David Sedaris, Spike Lee, Gideon Yago, Christopher Buckley, and many more.

Procedures for requesting co-sponsorship:

  1. E-mail Becky to schedule a meeting with the Speakers’ Bureau. Meetings are Sundays at 7 pm, although special arrangements can be made to accommodate clubs’ schedules.
  2. Submit an online form at least three (3) weeks in advance. Get the form here: http://www.skidmore.edu/studentorgs/speakers/request.htm. Larger sums of money should be requested at least five (5) weeks in advance.

·      Amounts over $1,000 require a second meeting to show the Speakers' Bureau that your group has appropriately moved ahead with planning the event or addressed any concerns. After the second meeting, you will receive an e-mail within 48 hours of the board’s decision.

·      Amounts $750-$1,000 may require a second meeting at the board’s discretion. The board will decide this at the first meeting whether a second meeting is necessary.

·      Amounts under $750 do not require a second meeting. You will receive an e-mail within 48 hours of the board’s decision.

  1. Meet with Speakers’ Bureau! Bring supplemental materials on the speaker, information about event co-sponsors, confirmed lecture space for the appropriate date(s), advertising plans, and itemized financial budget requests. The more organized and informed you are, the more likely you will be to receive the amount requested.
  2. Once you’ve received Speakers’ Bureau approval, the Speakers’ Bureau treasurer will transfer funds into your club’s account.
