Sustainability Volunteer Job Description
Sustainable Skidmore’s student Volunteer S-rep program is designed to increase environmental awareness and inspire behavior change in the residence halls. Volunteer S-Reps work alongside the S-Rep in their dorm to offer information on environmental topics, serve as a sounding board for environmental concerns in the residence halls and offer activities surrounding sustainability. They educate their residence hall mates about environmental issues such as energy conservation and waste reduction and will help plan related activities in their residence halls. Other duties include group activities, collaborative projects, and opportunities to represent the S-Rep Program at various campus events.
What We Are Looking For
- Creative, enthusiastic individuals who are passionate about environmental and social issues
- Effective communication skills (through a variety of means)
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively
- Ability to learn information about environmental topics and relate that information to your peers
What You Will Gain
- Leadership and peer education skills
- Knowledge of environmental and social topics
- The experience of working with other passionate students
Time Commitment
Volunteer S-Reps are unpaid positions that allow students who have too many other commitments to be involved in the S-Rep program. So, if you are on a sports team or have too many classes, this could still fit into your schedule! Or, if you are studying abroad for one of your semesters, you could do this for half of the academic year while you are still on campus! If you have a commitment to sustainability, and want to help others learn more about it, then this is a great opportunity. As a volunteer, you might spend 1-2 hours per week assisting the S-Rep in your residence hall with programs or events, or education for others in your dorm. This will vary by week, and sometimes it may be as simple as helping to hang up posters, or send emails out. Other times, it may mean helping to plan an event in your residence hall about climate change, or helping to encourage people to participate in Recyclemania! The sky is the limit, but this volunteer position allows you the flexibility to stay involved throughout the semester, without as much commitment as the full S-Rep position.
