The NYS Summer Young Writers Institute is open to any high school student entering the 10th, 11th, or 12th grade in the fall of 2017, who resides in the United States.
Please read this entire page for instructions on how to apply before continuing on to the online application.
A complete application consists of the following.
Completed online application form submitted electronically.
Upload as attachment to online application your best writing sample – any genre(s) – poetry, fiction, dramatic writing (screenwriting, playwriting, dramatic monologue), up to a maximum of 15 pages (typed, double-spaced).
Payment of nonrefundable $60 application fee. On the application, you may request a fee waiver if you are unable to pay the fee.
Please make sure you have the writing sample attachment ready and in the correct format prior to starting the online application process.
Please make sure the file name of your attachment includes your full name and description of the attachment, example: JohnSmithSample.docx—no spaces and no symbols
Attachment should be in the following format and be no larger than 100MB each.

- If applicable, send a financial aid application and supporting materials by hard copy to the address noted on the application.
Submission of all of the above is due by April 1, 2017.
Writers that are accepted into the Summer Young Writers Institute will be notified after April 20, 2017.
IMPORTANT! Once you start your application, you will need to complete it in its entirety. The system won't allow you to make changes once the application has been submitted. If you close the browser you will lose all of your information.
