Rather than focus on any one topic, this course will introduce incoming Honors Forum students to a wide range of disciplines, topics, and Skidmore Faculty. Each week, a different faculty member will assign a reading, then lead a class discussion based on the reading. The subject of the reading is up to the faculty member, so it may be their research specialty, a side interest, or an article on a current issue in the news.
Additionally, for the first time ever, this semester we will devote two class meetings to student presentations instead of faculty lectures. The presentations will be from the students who have engaged in collaborative research projects with faculty over the summer. This will give you an idea of the research opportunities available to Skidmore students.
This course is graded on an S/U basis. A satisfactory grade requires attendance and participation in the class discussions. There will be no written assignments or exams. The Honors Council believes that Honors Forum students, at least for this particular course, are self-motivated and mature enough to handle a course without exams. By removing the pressure and competition that sometimes accompanies the academic environment, the council believes it is setting up an atmosphere that will allow the class to focus on ideas rather than on grades, and allow for energetic and exciting class discussions. We want you to get to know each other, meet as many of Skidmore's finest faculty as we can present in one semester, be introduced to many different topics, and have fun with the course!
In this section I will list other lectures/events of interest to HF101 students. While attendence at these events is not required, it is strongly encouraged.:
