Technology Revisited and Resolved

Let’s take a look around and see where we are-

(Huge bonus points to whomsoever knows where that quote came from. Jim Troutman not eligible.)

  1. •Logitech/Harmony remote - Resolution: They found it (it was lost in the mail - actually by the Canadian Post Office... Oh Canada!) and have offered a replacement for $50 since it was out of warranty. I’ll take them up on it and use it as a backup. I already bought a replacement to alleviate the household-annoyance-factor (i.e. wife not wanting to press 3,432 buttons to watch TV). So- all resolved to my happiness.

  2. •Outlaw 1070 receiver - Resolution: Sent in for repair and returned in about 1.5 / 2 weeks. I haven’t put it back in the system yet as it’s a bit of a pain, but, presuming its fixed, I’m all happy again. One thing- they didn’t put any notice of what they did in the returned unit. Come on Outlaw, we’re not all idiots out here, tell us what you did (Apple does this with their repairs and, as you’ll see below, it sort of helps diagnostically when trying to figure out if they actually broke something new while fixing your old problem.)

  3. •TomTom Go GPS - Resolution: Sent me a new one in about a week. Way to go TomTom.

  4. •Macintosh MacBook Pro - Resolution: A visit to the Genius Bar™ seems to have resolved everything. The previous off-site repair (which, interestingly enough, could have been done at the Apple Store apparently!) resulted in RAM being returned as ‘not OEM’, yet it was RAM that was included in the machine when I ordered it. After explaining it and documenting the 30-or-so emails with the Apple Tech, he replaced it without a question. By that time, the battery was acting up (the mysterious ‘X’ in the charge bar, crazy blinkenlights). They were out of stock on the replacements, and I noticed that it was even out of stock on the mail order store. Makes one wonder if there is a ‘larger problem’. (Interesting side note- the ‘Genius’ claimed that there was no recall on the 15” MBP batteries, sorry but there is: https://support.apple.com/macbookpro15/batteryexchange/ . I will call Steve and have you converted into a SubGenius immediately.

  5. •iPod Volvo Adapter - Resolution: Screw it. I just bought an iPhone and have returned my iPod to its rightful owner. The Volvo adapter sort of works with the iPhone, just like it did with the iPod. (Note for Apple geeks, ‘iPhone’ is marked as misspelled in iWeb). The bad - the adapter still sort of locks up when you leave it connected and cycle the car engine. For some reason, only supports 3 playlists. (It’s supposed to support 10 and does with the iPod).  Can’t use as a speakerphone. The good - Actually charges the iPhone. Works without much noise (less than the iPod honestly) despite the “there may be some noise” warning when you plug it in. And it shows you what song title  is playing on the charging screen, a great advance over how it works with the iPod where there is no information shown at all. (There’s supposed to be a Volvo logo but that doesn’t work with more recent podz.) A great advance would be the artists too!

  6. •Refrigerator - Resolution: Teach Violet to -close- the door when she gets something out of there.
